McADAM STORES We are delighted to have a reply to our request for information about the Mc Adam photo from his nephew, Neil Thain.

While I cannot identify the chappie in the picture[with his new bonnet, from Jimmie Nicol, the tailor] nor the pair of Shires,The  photographer was James [Jimmie] McAdam [my uncle.] Although he had only one arm, the left one severely atrophied from polio, Jimmie either carried his equipment [big bulky camera, plates, heavy oak tripod, etc.] or loaded up his motor bike and side-car and went to the various locations. He was entirely self-taught and used his sister [my mother] as a 'guinea pig' or model. The "shoppie" that you mentioned at Eldenside [it was started by Peter Ross, who built all the houses at Eldenside] was where uncle Jimmie sold honey [he was a very knowledgeable bee-keeper] and paraffin for the 'lichties.'
