id you know that the new arrival for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will have direct ancestors buried in Peterculter Churchyard? This link is through Prince Willam and his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Her Great-Grandfather , Col. William Smith-Gill was born in Aberdeen in 1865 and died, aged 92, at Dalhebity House, Bieldside on Christmas Day 1957. He married Ruth Littlejohn on 30 Jun 1898 in Aberdeen. He was 33, she was 18. Their daughter, Ruth Smith-Gill, was the grandmother of Princess Diana. She was born at Dalhebity House in 1908. She was to marry Edmund Roche , 4th Baron Fermoy in 1931 and their daughter Frances Roche was Diana’s mother.
This will make William Smith-Gill and his wife Ruth, buried at St. Peter’s Churchyard, the Great-Great-Great- Grandparents of the new arrival.
The full text of the headstone and location can be found in the booklet “The Cemetery of Peterculter” recorded by Bill and Eileen McHardy, available at the Heritage Centre.
