Harry Gordon was one of Scotland's favourite comedians during the first half of the 1900's. He was born on 11 July 1893 in Aberdeen and educated at King Street school and the Central School in Little Belmont Street. He was soon gripped by visits to the theatre- Her Majesy's Theatre in Guild Street, later to be know as The Tivoli- and by 1908 he had won his first talent contest. This was in 1908, at the Beach Pavilion in Aberdeen, a place which was to become a large part of Harry's life in later years. By the 1920's he had teamed up with Jack Holden and Archie Hyslop to write many songs and sketches and with the pianist Alice Stephenson who was to play for him for the next 20 years. So began a career which spanned theatre, gramophone and live broadcasts for the BBC- and made him one of Scotland's highest paid entertainers of his day. Around him, he built the legend that became INVERSNECKY- which like Brigadoon is elusively "just outside Aberdeen" and populated by a host of "weel-kent" characters. Although Harry died in 1957, his songs and sketches remained- and his anthem- Fitty Folk, Kitty Folk, Country Folk and City Folk. Folk fae Constitution Street And Folk fae Rubislaw Den. Wallfield, Nellfield, Mannofield and Cattofield, List to local stories that professors dinna ken. was taken up by the "Scotland The What?" team in the 1970's, 80's and 90's as they continued with Harry's particular brand of local humour. "Cold Today!" is narrated by well-know local actor Alistair Harvey and music is provide by our own "Alice Stephenson" - Winnie Foster. Callum Stuart appears as Harry Gordon "The Laird of Inversnecky". Callum's "acting bug" began at Cults Academy where he played leading roles in the musicals "Oliver", "Oklahoma" and "Half a Sixpence"- returning as a "mature pupil" when Cults Academy appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in 1982, with "The Apple Tree" and won a Festival Fringe First Award. After completing the Drama course at Aberdeen College of Education he has taught in schools across Aberdeenshire. Presently, he is Principal Teacher of Drama at Bridge of Don Academy. Since then he has gone on to appear in many local productions - appearing in the title roles "Hans Andersen" and "Barnum" at His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen. His role as Phineas T. Barnum involved trapeze work - being hoisted high over HMT stage- and walking a tightrope across the stage. He has also directed many productions including "Carousel", "Calamity Jane", "Gigi" and "Bitter Sweet" at His Majesty's. This year, he has appeared in another of Charles Barron's adaptations "The Shrew" at the Lemon Tree and in April 2002 he took on the role of Fagin in Phoenix Theatre's "Oliver!" at HMT. |
