GALA FUN DAY-
DESPITE THE
WEATHER!
Regrettably, due to the weather, the Gala Field
was
water-logged overnight. The outdoor events of the Culter Gala
could not go ahead as planned
this year.
However, local groups and stalls
set up in the VILLAGE
HALL and had an afternoon of Circus fun there
instead. Clowns were on hand to bring some slapstick
entertainment and balloon-modelling in the Garden.
Congratuations to the Best Stall winners
the PTA, Runner-up was the
PLAYGROUP and
CASKET were highly commended.
Nine month old NICOLE DUNCAN
stole the judges hearts as a Clown to win the Fancy Dress
Competition. Runner-up was SAM GELDOLF
as a Tiger. Highly commended were brother and sister
OTTO and LOTTA DE KONING.
(Sorry, Otto for suggesting you were a cat. When in fact,
you were obviously a very dangerous panther!).

The cancellation of the Culter Gala and the
Street Procession on Saturday is obviously the subject of much discussion
around the village. Everyone is very aware of what the Gala means to the
village, from children to the elderly, and the decision to cancel wasn’t
taken lightly. However, the Gala Committee together with the Community
Council felt they had no choice but to cancel the event for this year. The
persistent rain overnight left the school field waterlogged, large puddles
were littered about the field and would have made it very unpleasant for
both exhibitors and spectators alike. However, the main consideration was
the risk of accidents and the potential damage to the field itself. The
contract for hire of the field, from Aberdeen City Council, makes it clear
that the Gala Committee are liable for any damage – this could have amounted
to a considerable sum of money and a risk not worth taking. It would have
almost certainly have caused the cancellation of the Culter School Sports
Day, an important event in the school’s calendar.
We apologise to everyone, especially those
who were taking part in some way and those who were looking forward to the
big day. Unfortunately we have no control over the weather!!
As everyone knows we managed to arrange an
event at the Culter Village Hall. We know that many groups rely on Gala Day
to generate funds and put a lot of effort into it. Special thanks go to
Alison Skinner and the Hall Committee at the Culter Village Hall for helping
us at extremely short notice; all the stallholders who threw their stalls
together splendidly in the little time they had and all the helpers who
turned up on the day to lend a hand and worked extremely hard. And most of
all, to everyone in the village who turned out to prove that the community
spirit is still very evident in Culter. If we didn’t know before, it
confirmed that Gala Day is a special event in the Culter calendar. It wasn’t
the day we had planned or wished for but I hope it was fun and a day we
won’t forget for some time to come.
I personally would like to thank the Culter
Gala Committee for their hard work over the last few months, but
particularly on Saturday morning when all the plans went to ruin and they
rallied round to recover the situation. They were tremendous - thanks goes
to them all.

The
Culter Gala, organised every year by the Community Council, takes place in
the last week of May at the Culter School Playing Fields.
This year,
Gala Day is Saturday 28th May 2005.
The theme for the event is
"Join the Circus".
Gala Day will begin with the Procession through the Village at 1.15pm . The Official Opening
will be by Former Dons player,
currently Manager of Buckie Thistle F.C., Duncan Shearer.
All organisations and individuals are invited to take part. Apart from
all the fun involved, the event raises funds for the Community Council to
promote local projects and events and for each organisation involved.
From last year's Gala Fund, the Gala Committee was able to offer grants
to the following organisations:
