Weather Washout

No Match

Weather Washout. After the snow had disappeared the wet weather resulted in yet another postponement. Our Superleague game due against Halt Russell United at Denmore Park, Bridge of Don on Saturday 6 February 2010 was called oft. Attempts to arrange an alternative fixture all proved in vain. There will be a busy time ahead with an abundance of evening fixtures to offset the backlog. This was out gth Saturday without football — 7 postponements and 2 free dates.

5 Years Ago. Culter went down by the only goal of the game in a 2 Round Inter Regional Cup tie against Elmwood at Crombie Park on Saturday 5 February 2005. Disaster befell Culter on the stroke of half time when a shot from distance struck Murray Rattray on the upper arm and the Referee pointed to the spot. Despite protestations the decision stood and Leah netted the penalty. Culter had dominated the game throughout but could not find the net — after the match an Elmwood supporter commented that “We were gubbed 0-1!” Newcomer Gordon Farmer had a good debut and our line-up was:M Pirie; Cowell, Allan, Calder, Rattray, Adam, Davidson, Stewart, Ord, Craik, Farmer; Substitutes: Cameron, Smith, Thain, Grant, I Pirie

15 Years Ago. Atrocious weather heralded by driving rain greeted Culter on arrival at Longside for
a Premier League match on Saturday 11 February 1995. There was heavy snow on Friday and the
Longside pitch was covered but it disappeared overnight and the game unexpectedly went ahead.
The result was a 1—1 draw. Longside were 1-0 ahead at the interval and Jed Wallace equalised.
Longside had recently opened their new social club adjacent to the football pitch. Culter’s team: Ainslie; Grant, C Nicol, Smith, Robertson, G Davidson, DJ Nicol, D Nicol, Paterson, Wallace, Lovie; Substitutes: Mckenzie and Feroz.

25 Years Ago. Culter beat Grampian Spurs 2-1 in an Amateur League Division 1 game at Crombie Park on Saturday 9 February 1985. The Referee was Douglas Reid and both our goals were scored by Stuart Davidson. The wintry weather caused numerous match postponements but our game went ahead. There were snow flurries in the morning and it was very cold. Our team which gave us our 2 league double of the season was:-
A Thain; P Irvine, R Kennedy; J Sutherland, P George, I Massie; S Davidson, A Smith, R Clark, I Smith, A Johnstone; Substitutes: B Russell and M Persichini

35 Years Ago. In a 1st Round Chattan Rovers Cup tie replay Culter made no mistake this time against 3 Division side Nicoll’s XI after a 2-2 draw at Crombie Park. Culter won 5-0 at Inverdee on Saturday 8 February 1975 through goals from Ronnie Smith (2), Dave Gordon (2) and Alex Irvine with Ronnie’s first goal coming in 20 seconds! Dave Gordon made it 2-0 in the 2 minute. It was bitterly cold and our players were glad to be wearing red gloves knitted by Mrs Elma Forsyth. The Referee was again the remarkable deaf Alex Fraser and Culter lined up as follows:R Lovie; D Strath, R Beattie; C Galashan, A Irvine (Captain), C Buist; D Jarnieson, I MacDonald, R Smith, D Gordon, P Lonqmoor; Substitutes: P George and H Steel

Heritage Hunt. St Peter’s Heritage Centre members are planning a display of past sporting days in Culter. One item sought is an old leather football, the lacing up type. Does anyone have one in their loft or shed? The football would be returned to the owner after the display is over. Please let me know if you can provide this vintage item.
