Winter Whiteout

No Match

Winter Whiteout. After resuming matches last week it was a blow when the snow came just before the weekend resulting in yet another snow stoppage. Our Superleague game due against Longside at Crombie Park on Saturday 30 January 2010 was postponed to add to the backlog of fixtures.
10 Years Ago. Culter recorded a fine 2-1 victory over Banks o’ Dee at Crombie Park in the 2 Round of the Great Northern Trophies Regional Cup on Saturday 29 January 2000. The game was played with the wind reaching gale force at times. After a goalless first half DD Galbraith put us ahead then Roddy Cameron made it 2-0 with J Wilson scoring a late consolation goal for Dee. J Nicolson was Referee and our team was:

Troup; Gibb, Whyte, Campbell, Small, Marr, Lawrence, Wyness, DD Gaibraith, Cameron, Mime; Substitutes: Johnston, Fraser, Anderson, Bain, DW Gaibraith

20 Years Ago. On Saturday 27 January 1990 Culter beat Lewis United 2 —0 in a Bon Accord Glass Premier Division game at Crombie Park. This win completed a league double over our opponents. The Referee was A Freeland, Portlethen and our scorers were Alan Walker and Paul Thomson whilst our line up was as follows:R Seivwright; M Craig mile, A Johnstone; S Rose, E Shearer, L Mason; M Kennedy, C Tweedie, B Burnett, P Thomson, A Walker; Substitutes: R Masson and K Kennedy

30 Years Ago. Back to our Amateur days we beat Oxy Sporting Club 2-1 In the 4th Round of the North of Scotland Cup at Crombie Park on Saturday 26 January 1980. The Referee was Jim Buyers, Aberdeen. All the goals came in the first half with an own goal putting us ahead, James Adams equalised then Steven Murison hit home what proved to be the match winning goal. Culter:K Davidson; J Thomson, C Lawrence; R Westland (Captain), F Gauld, G Scott; M Kennedy, S Munson, R Smith, P Longmoor, K Garden; Substitutes: W Moir and R Beattie
Included in the squad was new signing Wilson Moir, my 17 year old nephew. Wilson was still at Cults
Academy and was quite possibly the first schoolboy to sign for Culter FC. He first “signed” for Culter in January 1971 — as Bali Boy! Wilson was the Deeside A’ Player of the Year in Season 1977/78 and was a member of the Aberdeen Schoolboys Underl 5 team, including John Hewitt and Neale Cooper, which were Joint Scottish Cup winners with Ayr in 1977/78. Wilson spent a week on trial with Dundee FC in 1978.

Culter Co-op Closure. It was sad to see the closure of the Culter Co-op/Alldays store yesterday. The
premises were of course Thom’s Bakery in the past. We bought our Pies for Match Catering from Thom’s Bakery over many years until they ended their era. An interesting extract from the Minutes of a Culter FC Meeting on 10 August 1952 is reproduced as follows:-

“As the Club was running short of white pants it was decided to contact Thom’s Bakery for flour bags. Mr Fowler stated that his wife would be quite willing to make them.”

The Club was obviously having difficulty with funds in 1952. Further extracts from these Minutes state:- “As A Allan had a particularly good pair of football boots to sell for Lilt was decided to purchase them for the Club.

Owing to the heavy cost for the laundry of jerseys, it was decided that players would be responsible for the cleanliness of their own kit.”

Forthcoming Fixtures

Sat 06 Feb 2010— Superleague: Hall Russell Utd v Culter (at Denmore Park Bridge of Don) KO 2.15 p.m. Saturday 13 Feb 2010— 2 Round GA Engineering Inter Regional Cup: Downfield v Culter (at Downfield Park, Dundee) Kick Off 2.15 p.m. — played to a finish — straight to penalties if level at 90 minutes. Should tie be postponed or otherwise not completed on the above date it will be rearranged for Saturday 27 February 2010 allowing the North and East Section games for Saturday 20 February 2010 to proceed without disruption

We have played Downfield twice before in this competition. We reached the Semi Final and played them at Downfield Park, Dundee, on 19 May 1990 — it was named the Zamoyski Trophy then. We had two bus loads making the trip to Dundee. We were ahead 1-0 at the interval through an Alan Walker goal. Downfield were awarded an inexplicable penalty by Referee J McBurney of Barnhill which bemused friend and foe alike for Roy Price’s 68 minute equaliser. Downfield’s winning goal came in the 77th minute from John Young. Our team that afternoon was:- R Seivwright; C Tweedie, A Johnstone; S Rose, M Craigmile, L Mason; M Kennedy, P Smith, C Marnoch, P Thomson, A Walker; Substitutes R Tait and K Kennedy.

Culter progressed to the 3rd Round of the Inter Regional Cup with a goal in each half against Downfield at Crombie Park on 21 October 2006. Our scorers were Gordon Farmer and Peter Stewart. The Referee was K Milne and our line-up was:- Pine; Cowell, Rattray, Calder, Campbell, Presslie, Morrison, Mountford, Ord, Christie, Farmer; Substitutes: Shand, Stewart, Sim, Craib, Smith.
Committee Convenes. A Committee Meeting of Culter Football Club will be held on Tuesday 2 February 2010 in Crombie Park Pavilion, Culter, commencing at 7.00 p.m.
