Culter 2 Stonehaven I (at Crombie Park, Culter) Half Time 1-1
Scorers: Culter — Allan Youngson 12 mins) and Ryan Stott (85 mins),
Stonehaven — Andy Sim
( 12th minute
own goal)
Culter kept their slim title hopes alive when they narrowly beat relegation
candidates Stonehaven on a far from enthralling encounter at a cold Crombie
Park. It took a special goal from Ryan Stott to seal the victory.
‘Hive looked lively to start belying their lowly position when former Culter
player Davie Glass blasted we wide from good position. The Deesiders almost
atoned moments later when Derek Craigie hoofed wide from inside the area as play
swung from end to end. There was complete shock for the home side in the 12th
minute when a harmless cross was missed by John Farquhar and the unfortunate
Andy Sim attempting toclear headed the ball into his own net via the post Cutter
almost got one back two minutes later when Derek Craigie waltzed past a static
home defence but he slotted the ball into the net despite a close offside
decision. A few minutes later Andy Sim almost made amends for his earlier faux
pas when he set up Ryan Stott with a great through ball but when vertically
chalienged the wide man dallied and the chance was gone. With 22 minutes gone
Adam Wilson tried his luck with a header but his try was cleared at the second
attempt by ‘keeper Mike Smith. The home side were not to be denied and equalised
in the 32nd minute when Referee M. McNab gave a controversial bounce up after
Mike Barbour and the ‘Hive keeper cOlided and from the resultant bit of ping
pong Alfie Youngson fired a peach high into the net from the edge of the area. A
few minutes later Lewis McKimmie had the first of several good chances in the
game when he blazed over from good position. Top scorer Martin Shand then had a
go before half time but his finish was woeful from great position.
Cutter had all the early possession in the second half but could not find the
target against an ordinary ‘Hive side with Lewis McKimmie the principle sinner
when he wasted several good opportunities. ‘Hive, however, were far from out of
it and John Farquhar had to be at his best to dive full length to divert a
fantastic pile driver from Mike Adam past the post. With a draw looking likely
the Deesiders were dealt a severe blow when ‘keeper John Farquhar was dealt a
red card when he handled outside the area and Skipper sensation Murray Rattray
had to don the gloves. He was nearly called into action a few minutes later when
a bending free from Mark Galashan hit the upright but cannoned to safety. With
the game heading for a draw which suited neither team sub Shug Robertson let the
ball drift over his head and Ryan Stott was on to it in a flash and sent a
screamer past the ‘Hive keeper and into the back of the net from deep inside the
penalty box in the 85th minute. Deep into stoppage time Culter survived a
penalty claim but they held out for an ill deserved victory.
