Superleague — Saturday 4 April 2009
Sunnybank 5 Cutter 0 (at Heathryfold Park, Aberdeen) Half Time: 4—0
Scorers: Richard Shand 10, David Greig 31, 35, Nick Geddes 45 and Jamie
McAllister 47 minutes
The frailties of
Culter’s squad were brutally exposed when they were hammered by Sunnybank at
Heathryfold. The Deesiders’ defence was pedestrian as the visitors capitulated
to a far superior home side. There was a minute’s silence before the match for
the recent helicopter disaster in the North Sea.
Cutter started fairly brightly with Derek Craigie smashing a free kick just wide
of the post before ‘Bank raced up the park allowing Nick Geddes to pounce on a
mistake but John Farquhar saved well. The home side took the lead in the 10th
minute when the Cutter rearguard failed to clear and Richard Shand caught a
great first timer and blasted the ball high into the net. Culter almost
equalised soon after when Alfie Youngson picked out Martin Shand but he could
only shoot wide from a decent position. ‘Bank were now using route one to good
effect and a long ball found Jim Fettes who fired straight at John Farquhar but
the second was not long in coming when a flowing move by the home team
culminated in David Greig smashing the ball past the exposed Cutter ‘keeper in
31 minutes. The game was finished as a contest four minutes later when Cutter
looked for an offside decision which did not go their way and David Greig
reacted first to put the ball in the net as the Deesiders looked on bewildered.
Cutter’s frustrations were showing now with Alfie Youngson and Adam Wilson both
being shown yellow cards. ‘Bank then had strong claims for a penalty waved away
as Culter capitulated and they were four down when Nick Geddes brushed aside a
challenge from Ryan Pressley to fire the ball high into the net past John
Farquhar.
Any chance of a remote comeback was gone with only two minutes of the second
half gone when David Greig sped down the right before picking out half time sub
Jamie McAllister who gleefully turned the ball into the net with his first touch
of the ball. In an attempt to stem the tide Culter sent on Cohn Craik for Hugh
Robertson but it was too little too late. Derek Craigie should have pulled one
back in the 55th minute when he skipped on to a Martin Shand header but his lob
drifted past the post with Lee Sweeney beaten. In a final throw of the dice
Derek Craigie and Ryan Stott were replaced by Gordon Farmer and Lewis McKimmie
as the heavens opened. To make matters worse for Cutter Adam Wilson was shown a
second yellow when he howked down a ‘Bank player but strangely Cutter then
dominated proceedings and won a barrowload of free kicks on the edge of the area
which all came to nought. In the dying minutes Nick Geddes was given a straight
red for what looked like an innocuous challenge following his earlier booking.
