Lewis Lift

Superleague — Saturday 28 March 2009
Lewis United 0 Culter 3 (at Crombie Park, Culter) Half Time: 0 -0
Culter Scorers: Martin Shand 54, 67, Dod McBain 63

With Lewis United being forced to play all their games away this season Culter played visitors at Crombie Park
(eventually) and came away with an easy win in the end. It didn’t look that way for long periods until the
unfortunate Lewis McKimmie got injured and was replaced by Martin Shand and the sub changed the game.
This stopped the Deesiders’ recent run of poor results.

Culter had the early pressure into the wind strong North wind but a low Dod McBain shot was easily gathered by the Lewis ‘keeper. United came back into it soon after and John Farquhar had to save at the second attempt from a Phil Nelson try before the Culter custodian was forced into another save from Matt Gairns. As the half progressed an Alfie Youngson free kick was headed weakly wide by Adam Wilson. Diminutive Donnie Adam then sent the ball into Derek Craigie who chested down for Alfie Youngson but his right footer barely made it to Kevin Martin in the Lewis goal. With 18 minutes on the clock Derek Craigie soared like an emu to put an overhead kick wide of the post. Four minutes later a spanking Mike Middler free kick was well saved by the Culter ‘keeper before United had the ball in the net through Keith Wilson but he had strayed offside and it was chalked off. In the 26th minute a thundering long ball from Adam Wilson found Lewis McKimmie careering through but the Lewis ‘keeper pulled off a fine save. Culter were beginning to dominate and looked to have been denied a penalty when a Ryan Stott stotter appeared to strike a hand but the Ref waved play on. Just before the half time whistle a Ryan Stott corner was smashed just wide by Lewis McKimmie.

Only two minutes of the second half had elapsed when an Adam Wilson piledriver was well saved by Kevin Martin and moments later Derek Craigie almost got his first goal for Culter, this time round, but again the ‘keeper pulled off a super save. Soon after injured Lewis McKimmie had to retire and was replaced by magical Martin Shand but it was Derek Craigie who nearly broke his duck again when he rounded the ‘keeper but his goalbound shot was howked clear by Gregor Moir. Culter took the lead in the 54t1 minute when a Ryan Stott corner eventually fell to Martin Shand and he gleefully worked the ball into the back of the net. It was all Culter now with United pegged in their own half and apparently devoid of ideas on how to get back into the game as Culter racked up a plethora of chances and corners. The second was sure to come and inevitably it did when Ryan Stott found Dod McBain and he manoeuvred past his markers before slotting home number two. Culter then produced the move of the match which culminated in Ryan Stott whipping the ball into the area and Martin Shand pounced like a cobra to strike the ball into the net with astonishing venom. There then followed a procession of subs from both teams with Jake Strachan and Gordy Farmer coming on for Derek Craigie and Adam Wilson for Culter. The match itself was all one way and Dod McBain missed an absolute sitter from close range and could only look to the darkening heavens for an explanation. For some inexplicable reason Culter thought that the final whistle must have gone with 10 minutes to play and sat back and let a rather ordinary United side gain territorial advantage and John Farquhar had to pull off an acrobatic feet first save to deny Mark Donaldson. With the clock ticking down United almost did get that consolation when Alfie Youngson tried to dribble his way out of trouble and instead of blootering the ball clear he let Callum Stewart steal the ball and he curled a brammer past the flailing John Farquhar but to his relief the ball struck the post and cannoned away to safety.
