Superleague — Saturday 14 March 2009
Culter I Dyce 4 H-T 0-1 (at Crombie Park, Cutter)
Scorers: Cutter, Stott 54. Dyce, Wilson 20, Craik 61 (og), Neish 75, 81(pen)

In conditions more suited to windsurfing and officials more suited to the Casino by virtue of the amount of cards dealt out, Cutter were sucker punched into defeat by opposition who were content in lashing the ball upfield at every opportunity. This having been said, the opposition richly deserved their victory over a changed but subdued Deeside team.

With the wind at their backs Dyce took the early part of the game to Culter and a telling cross by Stewart Henderson was ably dealt with by John Farquhar before Darren Lewis pinged a free kick off the wall which fortunately skyted to safety... Stewart Henderson should have put the visitors ahead in the 7th minute but hit the side netting from an acute angle. Five minutes later John Farquhar inexplicably dropped an easy cross but Ryan Pressley was on hand to hoof the ball clear. The Deesiders’ first chance came in the 13th minute when Andy Sim crossed for Martin Shand but his header drifted tamelessly wide. A moment later a beaut of a Cohn Craik cross was thumped behind for a corner with Derek Craigie lurking large. Just when Cutter seemed to be gaining the upper hand Dyce went in front when Barry Wilson fired in an astonishing free kick which left the Culter ‘keeper looking to the heavens. This seemed to knock the wind, and there was plenty of it, out of Culter’s sails and it took them another 8 minutes to put a decent chance together but Cohn Craik fired straight at Tony Buckley. It could all have been so different in the 38th minute as Dyce conceded a plethora of free kicks near the edge of the area and from one of these Aflie Youngson smacked one off the post with Tony Buckley totally beaten. The same player tried his luck again four minutes later but this time his fizzer just about took the paint off the bar on its way into the car park.
Culter sent on Ryan Stott following his recent ankle break for debutant Jake Strachan and it paid dividends when a Derek Craigie free kick blootered off the wall and fell kindly for the sub who bashed the ball home from close range. Andy Sim then went on a typical rampaging run but just about when he was about to pull the trigger he was thwarted by a combination of Tony Buckley and Steve Webster. Referee Tom Shaw then must have decided yellow was the colour of the weekend and he must have had a hole in his pooch and a short pencil as he showed cards galore as the match deteriorated into a farce of Frankie Howard proportions. When he had stopped writing War and Peace Dyce went back in front when John Farquhar allegedly handled outside the area and from the resultant free kick the ball hit the post and squirted off Cohn Craik’s nether regions and into the net. The yellow cards then started to fly again as did the amount of subs for both sides but it was the visitors who went further ahead when Kevin Neish gave Strictly Come Dancing a lesson when he waltzed and jived through the Culter defence to send a perfect grounder past John Farquhar and into the net off the post. Culter almost got back into it a few minutes later but former Culter custodian Tony Buckley pulled off a remarkable double save as the home side strived for a lifeline. The game was over with nine minutes to go when Kevin Neish who was so far offside he might have as well been in the pavilion but neither the ref nor the road side assistant saw it and Martin Cooper had no choice but to howk down the lanky striker which earned him a straight red. Kevin Neish dusted down his skyrie boots and sent in a perfect penalty to earn Dyce all three points.

Top Team. It was announced at last Sunday’s NRJFA Meeting that Culter had been named as Superleague team of the month for January/February 2009. In these two months Culter only played four games but were undefeated — winning 3 games and drawing the other. Three Superleague matches were all played at Crombie Park beating Hermes 5-2, drawing 0-0 with Longside then most importantly winning 2-1 against reigning Champions Banks o’ Dee. The other win was at Milton Park, Crathes when Culter beat Banchory St Ternan 2-1 in the 2id Round of the North Regional Cup.
