Scorers:
Culter - Hugh Robertson 44, Adam Wilson 52. Banks o’ Dee Richard Scaiffe 75
(pen)
Culter moved to within one point of Superleague leaders Banks o’ Dee with a fine
victory over the champions. The Deesiders however have three games in hand over
the usurpers.
Culter were first out of the traps but did not trouble Ivor Pirie in the Dee
goal. At the other end Craig Phillips sent in a cross which Richie Stainer
headed straight at John Farquhar before ‘Dee mounted a series of unfruitful
attacks. Culter then won a rare corner which was howked clear by Neil Corser.
With 20 minutes gone the Deesiders were getting back into it with “Alfie”
Youngson pulling the strings but it was “Shug” Robertson who could have put
Culter ahead but just as he was about to pull the trigger two defenders combined
to thwart the rejuvenated ex pro. Culter then put together a good attack but
Cohn Craik fired over from deep in the area. Dee were far from out of it in an
evenly contested first half and Richie Taylor set up Gogs Carstairs but his
effort fussled just over the bar. With 38 minutes gone Shug Robertson tried a
grounder from outside the box which beat the ‘keeper but the shot rattled the
post and away to safety. A few minutes later Shug Robertson set up Alfie
Youngson but despite good position the finish was poor. Culter took the lead in
the 44th minute when Ivor Pirie made an absolute hash of a harmless looking
cross and his attempted punch fell at the feet of Shug Robertson who coolly sent
a delicate lob over the assembled defence and into the empty net. What a peach.
Dee almost equalised moments later but John Farquhar acrobatically saved a
goal-bound Kevin White try at the expense of a corner.
The opening exchanges of the second period were fairly even until Adam Wilson
played a one two with Shug Robertson and he darted clear to send a low rocket
into the net past the unguarded Ivor Pirie. The Deesiders then looked to have
taken an unassailable lead when a well placed Shug Robertson header found the
onion bag but inexplicably it was ruled out for offside. Both sides then sent on
a posse of subs as the match seemed to be going Culter’s way with Dee seemingly
unable to wake from the malaise of not being accepted for the Highland League.
They were however thrown a lifeline when a rash Cohn Craik challenge resulted in
a penalty which Richard Scaiffe hammered home with 15 minutes remaining. Two
minutes later Culter had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Andy Sim
went scampering through and was seemingly upended in the area by the ‘keeper but
play was waved on. Dee tried to grab an elusive equaliser late on but the well
marshalled Culter defence stood firm to earn a vital three points.
