Disappointing Draw

North Region Superleague — Saturday 21 February 2009
Culter 0 v Longside 0 (at Crombie Park, Culter)

In a transformation of the weather the match was played in February sunshine. Second top Culter faced second bottom Longside but the result did not reflect the difference in league positions and ended in a goal-less draw. It was our first league draw of the season.
Longside had the first effort on goal when Wood shot wide from a decent position with Cooper claiming for offside. Culter produced some slick football in the minute and a mazy run by Sim played in McBain whose low cross found Shand whose goal-bound flick produced a great reflex save from Thomson. Rattray came on for the injured Pressley in the 22 minute. Minutes later Wheeler made a surging run into the home box and his cutback picked out Wood 12 yards out but the midfielder somehow shot wide. On 32 minutes Culter had another close escape when Murray raced past the Culter defence only to see his long range lob drift past the upright. With play going from end to end Youngson found Craik with a great pass and the left sided player’s low cross found the onrushing McBain whose first time effort whistled past the post. Cooper forced Geddes to shoot wide from inside the box just as half time approached.
Half Time:0—0

McBain made a gut busting run at the start of the second half, racing the length of the park before seeing his powerful shot parried out for a corner. McBain then crossed for McKimmie to head over from close range as the home side went for the opening goal. Youngson then saw his 20 yarder turned past the post by Thomson before Cooper was replaced by Craigie. Youngson and Sim both saw decent efforts fly past the post and then Wheeler did well to head away Craik’s cross from the diving McBain. On 81 minutes Longside skipper Reid was shown a straight red card for a wild challenge on M Robertson that saw the defender require treatment. From the resultant free kick Shand headed over from a good position, Craik headed over and then McBain saw his shot well blocked as the Longside defence held out for a point in what had been a totally one sided affair for the home team in the second half.
