Tenth Time

We are now into double figures with Saturday matches being postponed for the tenth time. Our Superleague game due against Banks o’ Dee at Spain Park yesterday was the latest casualty. On eight occasions the cancellations were due to adverse weather conditions — a gale, frozen and snow covered pitches. Once was a free date for all Clubs and the other blank Saturday was when we were due to play Dyce Jnrs but their rescheduled Scottish Junior Cup Tie took priority.

10 Years Ago. The Great Northern Trophies Regional Cup 3rd Round Replay, Inverune Loco
Works v Culter, due to be played at snow covered Harlaw Park, Inverurie on Saturday 13 February
1999 was postponed as expected after our worst winter weather for some 20 years.

20 Years Ago A new fund raising idea was launched — Culter Coupons. Our new coupon featured 6 forecast NRJFA games with two lines for the stake of £1. Culter beat Buchanhaven Hearts 3—2 at Crombie Park in the 2 Round of the Zamoyski Trophy on Saturday 11 February 1989. The Referee was Ray Brown, Westhill, and our Scorers were Peter Smith (2) and Eric Shearer. Great pressure by Buchanhaven Hearts in the final minutes saw Bob Seivwright pulling off some marvellous saves. Our line-up was: Seivwright; Bremner, Johnstone; Fraser, Shearer, Bird; Mason, Thomson, Mamoch, Craigmile, Smith; Substitutes: Raffell, Cuthill.

30 Years Ago. The 5th Round Scottish Amateur Cup Tie, Culter v Pencaitland, due to be played on Saturday 10 February 1979 at Culter School Pitch was once again postponed due to the frozen pitch. This was our 11th consecutive Saturday of match postponements. Association Secretary S R Wood had been trying his best to arrange alternative games for Culter. Mr Wood went to the extent of fixing up a League game for Culter against Strichen on Saturday 10 February 1979 at Belistea Park, Fraserburgh, but it too succumbed to the severe wintry conditions. The 1 Round Chattan Rover Cup Tie, Culter v Maryculter, due to be played on Sunday 11 February 1979 was also postponed. Jack Wood, however, surprisingly managed fix us up with an Amateur League Division I game that Sunday against Chattan Rovers at Kincorth Academy, Aberdeen. The match featured league leaders Culter and 2nd placed Chattan Rovers and resulted in a I — I draw. The Referee was George Tierney, Aberdeen and the 2nd half scorers were Norman Gilbert (60th minute) and a last minute equaliser by Alan McRae. Peter Longmoor and Goalkeeper Billy Taylor were considered £Men of the Match” for their respective teams. Culter’s following line-up included Peter George who was home for the weekend after his first week in his new job in Dounreay:K Davidson: G Galashan, C Lawrence; R Westland (Captain). P George, N Gilbert; P Longmoor, G Shand, G Stuart, R Smith, K Garden; Subs: G Gauld and D Jamieson.

40
Years Ago. in our only game to be played In February 1969 we beat University Strollers 3—2 at Seaton in an Amateur League DivIsion 11 match. Our scorers were R Beattie, A Ritchie (penalty) and DNico. The rest of the games that month were postponed.

Next Week’s Fixture
Saturday 21 Februar’ 2009 — North Region Superleague
Culter v Longside (at Crombie Park, Culter) Kick Off 2.30 p.m.

Get-Well Gordon. Our best wishes for a very speedy recovery go to our Groundsman Gordon Laing following his hip operation at the end of last week. Gordon has timed it well with Crombie Park in its snow covered condition with no ground work possible meantime!
