Our Superleague game
due to be played against Longside at Crombie Park, Culter yesterday fell by
the wayside because of our snow covered pitch. This is now our ninth
Saturday without a fixture this winter. So it is back to another “Trip Down
Memory Lane”!
5 Years Aqo.
Culter beat Banks o’ Dee 3—2 at Spain Park, Aberdeen in 2nd Round of the
Rollstud Regional Cup on Saturday 7 February 2004. It was a hard fought
victory. Culter stole it in the end but if the game had gone to extra time
abandonment would surely have happened due to blizzard conditions with 8
minutes to go. Our team that afternoon was: Buckley, Thain, Rattray, Adam,
Small, Calder, Cameron, Momson, MeRitchie, Hendry, Craik; Substitutes:
Stewart, Cardno, Davidson, Fraser, Ord. The Referee was D Taylor. Roddy
Cameron and Donny Adam gave Culter a 2—0 lead at the interval but Foy and
McNamara brought Dee deservedly back on level terms. With the storm douds
looming and extra time looking a dIstinct possibility substitute Peter
Stewart popped upto score the winner.
We had just been stunned with the news that Groundsman Ron Mackay had
announced his resignation in his 16th year of exceptional service. Alex
Irvine acted promptly after Ron’s disappointing departure by immediately
contacting our former Groundsman George Aitken, Ron’s predecessor in the
role, and long-time loyal supporter Gordon Laing, to fill the gap. It was a
big relief to the Club for such a quick solution. Our thanks went to George
and Gordon for joining us so quickly and they are continuing to do a
wonderful job following in Ron’s footsteps. (Note: Gordon goes in for a hip
operation next week — our best wishes go to him for a very speedy recovery.)
15 Years Ago. in a thrilling Zamoyski Challenge Trophy 2’ Round Tie
at Crombie Park on Saturday 5 February 1994 Culter beat Premier Division
League Leaders Stonehaven 4—3 after extratime. Itwas 2—2 at hatf time and at
the end of normal time, then 3—3 at half time of extra time. Cohn Mamoch
scored the opening goal in under a minute and the winner in the 1 12th
minute. Our other scorers were Dave Oxley (28 mins) and Neil Shand (92
mins). On target for Stonehaven were Michael Barclay (22 mins), Stuart
Petrie (36 mins) and James Henderson (105 mins). The Referee was Alan Walker
and Linesmen were Craig Morrice and D Elrick. Our line up was: W Rose; G
Davidson, A Johnstone; A ‘lass, M Greig, L Mason; 0 Nico!, P Thomson, C
Marnoch, D Oxtey, A Walker; Substitutes: N Sharid and 0 Cowie.
25 Years Ago. Culter beat Ellon Thistle 4—0 at Ellon in an Amateur
League Division I game on Saturday 11 February 1974. It was a fine sunny day
for our first game in over a month. We notched up a good score-line, kept a
“dean sheet” and recorded our 4th league double of the season. Our scorers
were Stuart Davidson (55 and 85 mins), brothers Chippy Reid (3 mm penalty)
and Arthur Reid (86 mins). The Referee was John C Robertson, Strichen.
Culte?s team was: B Mime, B Russell; A Johnstone; K Thompson, P George, R
Mackay; S Davidson, S Munson, R Clark (Captain), A Reid, H Reid;
Substitutes: R Kennedy and R Westland.
