Winter Weather Woe

Our Superleague top of the table clash with Banks o Dee due to be played at Spain Park yesterday was yet another victim of the winter weather woe. Our corresponding Superleague fixture against Banks o’ Dee programmed for Saturday 29 November 2008 at Crombie Park was postponed then due to our frozen pitch. Yesterday’s match also failed the pitch inspection as Spain Park was frozen. Culter have now missed eight Saturdays for various reasons induding three postponements against Lewis United creating an unfortunate backlog of fixtures.

35 Years Ago. Culter beat Rosslyn Kinglassie 4 —2 at Crombie Park on Sunday 20 January 1974 in the
4th Round of the Scottish Amateur Cup. Cuiter made local amateur history by being the first team to play a competitive match on a Sunday. The tie was brought forward at the request of our opponents due to their team problems with the 3 day working week. The village in which they play their home games, Kinqiassie, had a population of approximately 1000 and two former players W Fernie and J Bonthrone (then managers of Kilmamock and Aberdeen respectively) were born in the same street in Kinglassie.

The North East s first ever competitive match to be played on a Sunday brought out the sun and attracted a large attendance at Crombie Park. The crowd was estimated as 500 and a record collection of £28.84 was taken.

The Fife team wore maroon shirts so Culter played in our white strip. Culter made a crisp start when Graham Spry scored in the 2 minute. Two great efforts by Peter Longmoor hit the post and one was rewarded when Jim Heatherwick collected the rebound to score after 17 minutes had been played. Six minutes later Cuiter went ahead 3
0 when Arthur Watt cracked the ball into the net. On the stroke of half time Rosslyn Kinglassie were awarded a penafty and B Archibald made no mistake from the spot. The tie was virtually clinched when substitute John Low netted in the 78th minute. Referee J K McPherson added on extra time for injury stoppages and 8 minutes were played past the 90 minute mark. Rosslyn Kinglassies leading scorer Morris Arnold scored in the 94th minute to make the final score 4 —2.

Our team that historic afternoon was:- R Lovie; D Strath, R Beattie; G Buist, A Irvine (Captain), G Spry; P Longmoor, I MacDonald, R Smith, J Heatherwick, A Watt; Subs: J Low and D Jamieson. The Referee was J K McPherson and the Linesmen were E J Coutts and N Rose.
The week before this Cup match, Culter made one of our best ever signings
Peter George. Peter joined us from Banchory and made his debut against Banchory when we won 6—0!

Deeside Derby.
Next week’s cup tie against Banchory St Ternan at Crathes is creating great interest. Our opponents beat us 1
0 at Crombie Park on Tuesday 19 August 2008 in the opening Superleague game of the season, our only league defeat so far. This was their first ever win over Culter with the only goal of the game being Keith Home’s minute penalty kick. It was also a special match for them it was their 600th game as a Junior league team. Banchory St Temnan pulled off another fine win when they defeated reigning champions Banks o’ Dee 2 1 at Spain Park on Saturday 3 January 2009. St Teman are respectably placed 3rd in the Superleague at present. Look out for Danny law’s preview of next Saturday’s Cup Tie in this week’s Deeside Piper.

Committee Convenes. A Committee Meeting of Culter Football Club will be held in Crombie Park Pavilion, Culter on Tuesday 3 February 2009 commencing at 7.00 pm.
