Culter
eventually
cruised to victory in
a pulsating game at Crombie
Park
to keep their
title
hopes alive. The final score however did not do justice to the visitors who
competed
throughout
the
whole match.
The visitors started on top playing a passing game unsuited to their recent
reputation although the Deesiders had a strong claim for a penalty turned
down when vertically challenged keeper, Kyle Reid, clattered into Adam
Wilson but the ref. waved play on. The visitors had a chance in the
6th
minute but John Farquhar got down well to save from Ryan Sinclair before
Culter came into the game with a Dod McBain corner being headed over by Adam
Wilson. The home side were beginning to show some tItle winning aspirations
when they created a series of chances but could not find the target. This
seemed to galvanise the Donsiders and they should have gone ahead in the
22nd minute when Scott Mckay found himsoti free in the box but his flick
went agonisingly wide of the post. With just over half an hour gone Culter
went into the lead when a fantastic Allan Youngson free kick from distance
thundered oft the bar with the keeper beaten and fell kindly for the alert
Ryan Stott who hammered the ball into the unguarded net. Hermes had the
chance to equalise moments later but Martin Cooper raced back to clear a
shot off the line. With the half time hooter approaching Culter went two
ahead when Derek Craigie sent Ryan Stott on his way and the speedy side man
wasted no time before spinning in a cross which was met by Martin
Shand
who turned
the ball
home via a detlection
It was hard to believe that Culter were two up at the start of the second
period but they were made to pay for it soon. Culter looked in a malaise as
Hermes were straight back into it when Gary Robertson picked out Scott
Mckay
who fired
a
low cracker past John Farquhar. Controversy followed minutes later when a
Hermes player was sent crashing in the box by the Culter keeper but
incredulously the assistant had waved for a dodgy offside. The equaliser was
not long in coming when, following a corner. Gary Robertson flicked a ball
to Scott McKay who played a neat header beyond the Culter keeper to bring
the game level. The Deesiders then seemed to spring out of their lethargy
and following a couple of astute substitutions went on to dominate the
match. In the
69th
minute Marlin
Shand made a
goal
out of nothing when he
turned
his
marker in the box
and
fired a low one past the bemused keeper. It was all over bar the shouting in
the
82
minute when Allan Youngson went on a direct and powerful run from left to
right and just when he looked to have run out of space he squared the ball
to Martin
Shand
who blasted the ball high into the net Culter sealed a fine victory in the
last minute when Cohn Craik dallied on the right before sending in the
perfect cross for Martin Shand who sent a perfect glancing header beyond the
keeper and into the net.
