2nd Round Citylink Scottish Junior Cup — Sat 1 Nov 2008 — Culter 0 v Pollok
2 (at Crombie Park, Culter)
Half Time: 0 — 1. Pollok Scorers: David Turnbull (35 mins) and Bryan
Dingwall (77 mins)
History repeated itself 18 years on when Culter was again on the receiving
end of a two-goal defeat from Pollok. It could have been oh so different if
Culter had been awarded one of two stonewall penalty decisions in the second
half from referee George McGeown was first to try his luck after 5 minutes but
his half volley whistled over the bar. Matthew Robertson then side stepped a
couple of Pollok defenders and advanced towards the away goal but his 20-yard
shot trickled past the post. Rattray’s punt up the park was headed clear by
Wingate into the path of Matthew Robertson whose volley screamed over. Youngson
then fed McBain whose cross was met by Hugh Robertson who swept the ball over
the bar from a tight angle. Farquhar then made a Turnbull free kick look easy as
he dived to gather the forward’s 20-yard pile-driver. Farmer outstripped the
away defence but his inviting cross found no takers and minutes later Matthew
Robertson’s long throw into the box had the Pollok defence in a panic but again
there were no takers. In 35 minutes Pollok went in front, Rattray missed a
McClay long ball and the ball fell to Hardie whose cross was headed home by
David TURNBULL at the back post. As half time approached Wingate, Hardie and
Dingwall all had chances to increase PoIIok’s lead but the Deesiders held out
till half time. Half Time: 0 — 1.
McBain had a great chance to equalise early in the second half, he turned a
defender brilliantly but his 18- yard attempted lob drifted harmlessly past the
post. Farquhar was then called upon to parry away a thumping McGeown effort with
the game going from end to end. The diving Shand met Youngson’s free kick in the
box but Robertson easily gathered his header. Sim’s corner found Rattray at the
back post but his goal-bound header was well saved by the diving Robertson. In
the 74th minute Shand’s cross found Youngson whose first time struck shot was
clearly blocked by Miller’s arms in the Pollok penalty box but amazingly the
referee waved play on. A minute later Sim’s dangerous run into the box was again
ended by a defender’s handball, this time by Cruickshank, and again referee
George waved aside Culter’s furious claims for a penalty. This was to prove
vital for the home team in 77 minutes when substitute Downs sent in a delightful
cross for Bryan DINGWALL to flick home and secure the tie for P0110k and send
their large travelling support home happy. There was still time for Farquhar to
make a save of the highest quality from Downs’ blistering drive in the dying
minutes.
