Culter failed to make the semi finals of the Grill League Cup after a
penalty shoot out in a game that Turriff Utd should really have won in 90
minutes. Only poor finishing by Turriff and a late late equaliser by the
Deesiders made the game go to sudden death, which eventually Culter lost
4-3. Culter had the ball in the net after 12 minutes but Garioch was judged
to be offside after a neat finish. Brownie picked up a Reid pass and from
the edge of the box crashing the ball off the post. Then a King corner was
dropped by Farquhar to McLeod who headed towards goal but Sim was on hand to
kick the ball off the line only as far as Allan whose rasping drive was well
held by the home ‘keeper. H Robertson played in Stott whose harmless shot
was spilled out by Will for a corner and at the other end Brown shrugged off
two Culter players before blasting a 25 yarder just inches over. Ralton then
tried his luck from distance but Farquhar was perfectly placed to deal with
the piledriver. Just on half time Turriff had claims for a penalty turned
away by the referee when King went down easily after Farquhar dived at the
forward’s feet. Half Time: 0 — 0
The game finally burst into life in the 64th minute, McLeod flicked the ball
into the path of King whose low cross was turned into the net by Robbie
ALLAN from close range. In the 73rd minute Stott turned two Turriff
defenders before unleashing a powerful drive that rebounded back off the
inside of the post. Turriff went straight up the park with Reid squaring the
ball to an unmarked Henderson who somehow hit the post from 12 yards with
the home ‘keeper well beaten. Reid’s header at the back post brought out a
great reflex save from Farquhar and moments later Will pushed a McKimmie
header onto the post and out to safety. Slack defending in the Turriff
defence gave McKimmie a great chance, Will made a mess of a clearance and
with the ‘keeper out his goal McKimmie’s goal bound shot was deflected out
for a corner. Then just as the referee was looking at his watch, Rattray
brilliantly turned his marker in the box and squared the ball to Lewis
McKIMMIE who gleefully blasted the ball high into the net from close range
in the 89th minute to force the game to penalties.
