Culter claimed victory in a stuffy match with a 2-0 victory. The match
itself never really reached the heights but in the end the result was the
main thing and the Deesiders were comfortable winners in the end.
Culter started well with Martin Shand squeezing in a shot which was blocked
by John Chalmers before Derek Craigie fired one over at the other end. Ellon
almost went ahead in the 11th minute when a fierce Jim Ellis shot was
brilliantly saved by John Farquhar in the Culter goal. The home side had
strong claims for a penalty turned down in the 20th minute when a Dod McBain
cross appeared to be handled in the box but referee Braidwood waved play on.
Soon after Hugh Robertson robbed the Ellon ‘keeper and pushed the ball out
to Cohn Craik but his first time effort went woefully wide. Just on the half
hour mark Culter produced a flowing move involving seven players which
culminated in Allan Youngson’s cross being well gathered by Rich Bowman in
the Ellon goal. Moments later Mike Fletcher of Ellon produced a good turn in
the box but his parting shot squirmed wide of target. With half time rapidly
approaching Andy Sim set up Hugh Robertson and he strode forward before
releasing a venomous drive which flew just over. Culter almost snuck the
lead in the 45th minute when an Allan Youngson corner was narrowly headed
over by skipper Murray Rattray.
With the second period barely started Dod McBain tried his luck with a
boomer but it blazed well over the bar. With ten minutes of the half gone
Andy Sim cut out an Ellon pass and went darting forward before setting up
Martin Shand who squared the ball to Hugh Robertson who flashed a shot well
over the target. The Deesiders then sent on Lewis McKimmie for Martin Shand
in an attempt to prise open the Ellon defence but it was Adam Wilson who
provided the ammunition for Allan Youngson but his cute effort only found
the top of the net. Ellon almost went ahead in the 63rd minute when a pile
driver from Derek Craigie looked net bound but John Farquhar reacted to
produce a save of the highest calibre. A minute later Culter went in front
when Lewis McKimmie was downed in the box by Lee Baxter and Allan Youngson
stepped up to fire the perfect penalty into the corner of the net. Culter
went further ahead soon after when Andy Sim went scurrying down the right
before picking out Lewis McKimmie free in the area and he coolly slotted the
ball past the Ellon ‘keeper. A few minutes later Donnie Adam replaced the
injured Adam Wilson but it was Lewis McKimmie who had another go but his
crack was high and mighty. The remainder of the match was fairly evenly
fought but Culter deservedly came away with all three points.
