Culter finished top
of their League cup section with a comfortable win and a 100% record.
Shand blasted into the side netting early on but Culter went in front after
only 9 minutes. Youngson’s 20 yard shot was palmed into the path of Hugh
ROBERTSON who turned and fired the ball into the empty net. Hillhead’s reply
was swift and Pine’s 12 yard shot was well held by Farquhar. In the 28th
minute Hilihead were level when a dreadful mistake in the Culter defence
left Alan FORBES time to control the ball and shoot past Farquhar from 18
yards. Shand and Youngson both had good chances to score but in the 40th
minute Culter were back in front. Youngson’s corner was handled in the box
by Lepkowski and Allan YOUNGSON stepped up to send the home ‘keeper the
wrong way from the spot. Half Time: 1 —2.
Culter continued to attack and Rattray turned two players in the box before
watching his shot scrape the post. Farquhar then brilliantly palmed away a
Lepkowski pile driver before saving at the feet of Forbes when the clearly
offside striker was though one on one. Allan YOUNGSON increased the away
team’s lead with a long range effort in the 61st minute. Craik was then
unlucky to watch his effort scream past the post but in the 66th minute
Culter sealed the game. McBain’s inch perfect pass found Martin SHAND who
outstripped the Hillhead defence and slotted the ball past Park. Robertson
headed a corner against the crossbar and blasted the rebound over the bar.
Rattray then saw his free kick saved by the feet of Park but the home
‘keeper could do nothing to prevent George McBAIN’s angled drive finding the
net two minutes into injury time.

30 Years Ago. On Saturday 2 September 1978 Culter played Cults for
the 1st time since 1939, a 39 years gap, much to the disappointment of
Gordon Morrison. Gordon attended the 1939 match but was unable to be present
in 1978 due to his piping commitments at the Braemar Gathering. The Amateur
League Division 1 game was played at Cults on a rain lashed day. Culter won
1—0 through a Ronnie Smith headed goal in the 69th minute. The Cults line-up
included evergreen Hamish Moir. Our team was: K Davidson; G Scott, D
Jamieson; R Westland, G Gauld (Captain), N Gilbert, G Stuart, G Shand, R
Smith, P Longmoor, K Garden; Subs: C Graham and R Beattie. The Referee was
Eddie Coutts. After that game we topped the table, two points ahead of
rivals Kemnay.
