On a damp evening
Culter made a damp start to our Superleague campaign. There was a good
turnout for this “Deeside Derby” in spite of the weather. An interesting
fact was recorded by Deeside Piper Reporter Danny Law in his match report —
this was Banchory St Ternan’s first ever win over Culter and was their 600th
match as a junior league team. The Shand brothers were in opposition and for
good measure father Graham won our Raffle 1st Prize of a Bottle of
Glenmorangie Whisky.
Culter started off well but had a serious setback when Lewis McKimmie
suffered a nasty ankle injury and was carried off after 20 minutes had been
played. Just on half time the situation worsened for Culter when Martin
Cooper was sent off after being yellow carded for the second time. Half
Time: 0 -0.
Early in the second half an Ogston try was tipped over the bar by in-form
keeper Farquhar. In the 79th minute Hugh Robertson brought down KEITH HORNE
in the box and he made no mistake from the penalty spot for what proved to
be the match winning goal. St Ternan almost went further ahead when
Cruickshank sent the ball to Cromar whose net-bound drive was somehow
stopped by a brilliant John Farquhar save. Culter’s night of woe continued
when Matthew Robertson was red-carded for dissent. The Banchory players and
officials were jubilant after their success.

Culter got their league campaign back on track following the Derby defeat to
Banchory in the opening league game. The Deesiders totally dominated the
second half and ran out deserved winners.
Hermes started on the front foot and in an early attack John Farquhar had to
get down to block a Scott McKay effort. Ryan Stott then went on a rampaging
run but his cross was too swift for the posse of Culter players hurtling
into the box. Ryan Stott then tried his luck himself but his weak effort was
easily saved by Scott Cameron in the Hermes goal. In a rare Hermes attack a
Jordan Heads free kick was headed wide by Chris Allsop but play soon raced
to the other end with Allan Youngson trying to find the target with a couple
of decent chances. The breakthrough came with 3 minutes of the half
remaining when Martin Shand went tumbling in the box following a rash
challenge by Tommy Willox and Allan Youngson stepped up to despatch a
clinical spot kick.
With the second period barely four minutes old Hugh Robertson was gifted a
second when Scott Cameron dropped a complete danger when he failed to gather
a long cross and the Culter player had the simplest of tasks in stroking the
ball into the empty net. A few minutes later Donnie Adam fired in a scud of
a volley which smashed just over the bar with the ‘keeper beaten. A few
minutes later Allan Youngson added his second to put Culter on easy street
when he latched onto a quick Martin Shand free kick to kill the game. With
the match won Culter started pushing the ball about and from a Hugh
Robertson free kick they almost added a fourth but the ball was cleared off
the line. With nine minutes remaining Culter struck the woodwork when Sub
Mike Brown tried his luck. The final goal came in the dying minutes when a
long John Farquhar punt upfield was latched onto by Ryan Stott and he
outstripped the home defence to seal an impressive victory.
