Culter are top of Section 5 of the Grill League cup following an
uninspired victory over Parkvale at Crombie Park on Tuesday 5th August.
Although the home side dominated the match they could not add to the two
goals they scored early on.
The Deesiders started with all guns blazing and went ahead in the 3 minute
when Mike Brown fired in a corner which Adam Wilson headed home. Soon after
Parkvale had a rare chance but Cohn Craik blocked Steve Young’s tame effort.
The home side doubled their tally in the 11th minute when Andy Sim picked
out Allan Youngson who rifled past the stranded David Neish in the visitors’
goal. As the half progressed Culter were in complete control with Andy Sim
blasting one wide and Martin Shand placing a header just wide of the target.
The visitors were almost thrown a lifeline in the 42nd minute when Ian Penny
tried his luck from inside the area but his stinging shot rebounded off the
post and out to safety, Just before the interval Andy Sim picked out Adam
Wilson but this time he could only blast the ball wide of the mark.
Straight from the kick off Culter went on the offensive and were awarded a
penalty when Martin Shand was felled in the box but David Neish saved well
from Allan Youngson’s spot kick. Not long after Dod McBain tried his luck
but once again the Parkvale custodian was equal to the task. Culter then
sent on Donnie Adam and Murray Rattray for Andy Sim and Martin Cooper but it
was Adam Wilson who almost added the third but on this occasion his effort
hit the bar and rebounded into the keeper’s arms. The remainder of the half
was fairly tame fare with neither side managing to get a meaningful shot on
target.

Culter cruised to victory against a youthful United side
and are in control of the section as the only team with full points.
The early exchanges were fairly even until Martin Shand found the net from a
good Allan Youngson pass but he was adjudged to have drifted offside. A few
minutes later John Farquhar produced a fine save from a stinging Matt Dunn
attempt before Martin Shand had a glorious chance to put the Deesiders ahead
but he fired into the side netting. With 14 minutes gone a wayward Hugh
Robertson pass was picked up by Matt Dunn but he could not find the target
when clean through on goal. United were causing Culter problems with their
wide play but they could not penetrate a resolute home rearguard. With half
an hour gone Culter should have taken the lead but on this occasion Martin
Shand headed agonisingly wide following good build up play from Hugh
Robertson and Murray Rattray. A few minutes later some inspired interplay
between Allan Youngson and Dod McBain saw the latter sweep home to open the
scoring. The Deesiders were firmly in the driving seat a minute later when
Dod McBain went scurrying down the right wing before picking out Martin
Shand who had the easiest of tasks in poking the ball into the net. The home
side had a couple of half chances soon after but from one of these Craig
Duguid had a fine save from a Donnie Adam piledriver. United did get the
ball in the net just before the half time whistle but referee Craig Veitch
ruled out Matt Dunn’s attempt.
The home side sent on Andy Sim for Mike Brown at the start of the second
period and soon after replaced Donnie Adam with Ryan Stott but it was Dod
McBain who almost grabbed a third but he was well challenged in the box by
Grant Mitchell. Culter were beginning to dominate and they added another
attacker when Lewis McKimmie came on for Dod McBain but it was Allan
Youngson who tried his luck but his drive hurtled over the bar. Culter
increased their lead in the 71st minute when a Ryan Stott shot took a wicked
deflection and spun over the keeper’s head and into the net. United were
beginning to look a spent force now and they had to thank their keeper for
keeping the score down as Culter pummelled the beleaguered young defence. To
make matters worse they were reduced to ten men when Grant Mitchell was
shown a red card for a second bookable offence. Near the end Lewis McKimmie
and Mann Shand both had chances to add to the tally but the United custodian
brought out a couple of outstanding saves.
