Final Failure

Rainbow International Superleague:
Wednesday 28 May 2008 Culter l Banks o’ Dee 4 H-T 0-2 (at Crombie Park, Culter)

Culter’s topsy turvy season came to an unspectacular end when they were thrashed by Banks O’Dee in the last game of the season at a crowded Crombie Park. In a season Where little has gone right on the injury front hit man Chris Mountford suffered a double leg fracture late in the first half. The Deesiders have come away without a trophy for the first time in many years and this leaves Bobby Gray the task of motivating his current squad and any new signings for the start of next season’s campaign. Congratulations go to Dee who deserved to win the Superleague with only one defeat in the league.

Dee started strongly and tested Carson Riches early on but he looked confident following his return to the team. The champions elect went ahead in the 8th minute when they were awarded a penalty after the Culter custodian brough down a Dee forward in the box. Richard Scaiffe stepped up to slam the spot kick into the net. Culter tried hard to ge back into it and it almost paid off when an Andy Sim cross was met by Adam Wilson but his header went agonisingl’ over. As the half went on Dee grew in confidence and Lewis McKimmie had a decent chance but Carson Riches brough out a fine save. With 40 minutes gone Chris Mouniford raced onto a through ball and was challenged by Grant Pennan on the edge of the area but it soon became apparent that it was a serious injury and the Culter striker had to b stretchered off the field. Peter Stewart replaced the striker but it was Dee who added a second deep into time added or when following a series of corners Lewis McKimmie out jumped Andy Sim to score with a fine header.
The Deesiders fell further behind in the 3rd minute of the second half when Richard Scaiffe provided a clinical finish an two minutes later Lewis McKimmie sealed the championship with another super goal. The Deesiders huffed and puffed to pull back to deficit and were unfortunate when an Andy Campbell effort hit the post and away to safety. Culter did ge a consolation in the 68th minute when Dod McBain surged past a static Dee defence before cutting back to Martir Shand who finished with aplomb. Both teams made a series of changes as the Dee support howled for the final whistle and when it came they were ecstatic as the picked up their first league championship for twenty years. Association President Dennis Ewing presented the trophy to a jubilant Dee team.

Floral Football Farewell. The grandchildren of our former goalkeeper Arthur Stuart laid a special wreath, a flora football, from his funeral service at the Crombie Park goalmouth. This touching tribute was much admired by members of the huge crowd to our final fixture against Banks o’ Dee.

Peter’s Passion. An interesting gentleman visited Crombie Park for our final fixture. Peter Ford from Coventry is E “Ground Hopper”. His passion is visiting football grounds and Crombie Park was his 1960th in his journeys. He had been at Hampden Park last weekend and is going to Lochside Park on Friday to witness the ATR Group Cup Final between Ellon United and Sunnybank. We gave him some souvenirs of his visit to Culter — a Club Scarf, a Club Postcard and a copy of the Culter v Huntly Scottish Cup programme, much to his delight.

“Scottish” Score. After the conclusion of the 2007/08 Scottish Cup on Saturday 24 May 2008 when Rangers beat Queen of the South at Hampden Park an interesting fact emerged. Culter’s historic debut against Hawick Royal Albert on 29 September 2007 with a 7 — 0 victory turned out to be the biggest match winning score in this season’s competition. Our l Round Tie at Crombie Park featured us as the smallest ranked team in the Scottish Cup so to have the top match score was a remarkable feat.

Bulletins Break. After this week’s issue there will be a close season break of our Weekly Bulletins. We will resume publication in July 2008 dependent on the programme of fixtures.
