Bank Blow But Terrific at Turriff

Rainbow International Superleague: Sunnybank 3 Culter 2 H-T 2-2
Rainbow International Superleague Turriff United I Culter 3 H-T I-I

Rainbow International Superleague — Tuesday 29 April 2008 Sunnybank 3 Culter 2 (at Heathryfold Park, Aberdeen) Culter lost out to the odd goal in five in an entertaining match that had end to end action throughout. An early Sunnybank breakaway caught the away defence napping and only a timely interception from Pressley denied Greig. Shand should have done better with McBain’s cross but was caught in two minds and the danger was cleared. Greig was deprived by a double save by Knox but the midfielder was not to be stopped as David GREIG drove the ball low into the net from the edge of the box to open the scoring in the 14th minute. Culter’s reply was swift and Wilson’s driven cross was headed past Sweeney from close range by Martin SHAND a minute later. Steel’s free kick was headed back across goal by Fettes and met by Nicky GORDON to p0k home in 21 minutes. Knox then produced two terrific one-hand saves to deny Gordon and then Steel but Culter was right back in it o the 39”' minute. Brown’s corner headed home at the near post by Adam WILSON. Culter finished the half the stronger with Sweeney happy to gather Brown’s well struck shot. H-T 2-2.

The home team again gained the advantage in the 49th minute when Knox could only flap at Fraser’s corner and it went to Scott JOHNSTONE who the lobbed the ball over the defence and into the net. Shand was then tripped in the box but the referee waved aside his penalty claims. Craik’s rasping drive then went wide before Fettes headed Shand’s shot to safety. Fettes saw his cross come shot strike the bar to safety before Brown’s driven cross was controlled by the arm of Thomson and amazingly the referee again ignored Culters furious claims for a penalty even though he indicated that the ball had struck the defenders arm. Shand then had Sweeney scrambling for the ball before the same keeper was happy to see Brown’s shot flash by his post. In the last minute Brown curling shot from 20 yards was brilliantly tipped round the post by the home ‘keeper to secure the points for Sunnybank.

Rainbow International Super League — Saturday 3rd May 2008

Turriff United 1 Culter 3 H-T 1-1 (at the Haughs, Turriff)

Culter got back to winning ways with a comprehensive win over a battling Turriff outfit. The Deesiders took the game to United in the early stages with Andy Campbell feeding Chris Mountford who picked out Martin Shand but his whistler flew just over Moments later a powerful George McBain effort was deflected behind for a corner. United gradually came back into it but without putting pressure o Scott Knox in the Culter goal. The visitors took the lead in the 25th minute when a whipping John Brown cross was knocked into his own net by Mike Ralton. Barely 7 minutes later United were back on level terms when Les Lobban raced clear of Martin Cooper and buried the ball behind the Culter custodian. The rest of the first period was pretty evenly matched with neither side managing a shot on target.

Culter started on the offensive with Adam Wilson picking out Chris Mountford but he fluffed his shot and the chance was gone. Moments later Donny Adam replaced the injured Adam Wilson but it was Martin Shand who almost put Culter ahead when his attempt from a John Brown corner shaved the post. The second did come in the 49th minute when Chris Mountford found himself free in the area and despite heroics from Ross Buchan in the Turriff goal the Culter hit man followed up to net his thirtieth of the season. Midway through the half United won a corner and the Culter ‘keeper was lucky when he flapped at the ball but fortunately for him there were no takers. Peter Stewart then replaced Chris Mountford as Culter sought the killer 3 and the Drumoak Dart did not disappoint as he found Martin Shand but despite a spectacular overhead kick the ball flew well over. The vital third goal did come in the 77th minute when a John Brown corner was headed on by George McBain and the predatory Martin Shand was lurking to thrash the ball into the net. Soon after Graham Cadger came on for Martin Shand but it was Peter Stewart who almost added a fourth when he chased down a long Murray Rattray pass but Ross Buchan pulled off a decent save.

Diamond Day. Culter FC’s Crombie Park was opened 60 years ago on 3 May 1948. The occasion was attended by a large crowd including local dignitaries and businessmen. The tape as cut by Mrs Thom, wife of William Thom the local baker and the inaugural speech was made by J Fraser Geddes, Chairman Culter Mills Paper Company. The official kick off was by Mrs McNaughton, wife of businessman W R D McNaughton, watched by Referee George J Petrie. Culter’s first goal was scored by highly rated scorer Bob Williams who still resides in Culter and is very proud of his special goal. In addition to the Culter Amateur Team playing that afternoon it also featured a Culter Youth team. Thanks to local lady Mrs Norma Scott (daughter of that era’s late Secretary Jim Hunter and centenarian Moll) I have been in contact with a member of that youth team from 1946-48, Bill Dick, before doing his National Service then emigrating to New Zealand. Bill is hoping to be back to see Culter play in mid May.
