Monday 7th April
In a must win game Cutter came away with all three points in an
entertaining game at the Bridge of Don. The Deesiders management team
rang the changes following Friday’s narrow defeat at the hands of league
leaders Bank 0’ Dee. The visitors have now climbed to 6th place in the
table.
The visitors started brightly and Matt Courage had to react quickly to
deny a good John Brown cross from reaching the Lurking Martin Shand.
With only 7 minutes on the clock Chris Mountford raced through and beat
the onrushing ‘keeper to a long bal and he poked the ball towards the
empty net but despite attempted heroics from Grant Campbell he only
succeeded in blasting the ball into his own net from on the line. A few
minutes later Sean McKinstry of Hermes had a decent shot at the target
but Scott Knox was well placed to gather the ball. Culter then upped the
ante and went 2-0 up when a Gordon Farmer deep cross was knocked back
into the danger zone by Chris Mountford and Martin Shand was on hand to
bundle the ball over the line. Soon after Chris Mountford had a good
strike intercepted for a corner by Callum Duncan as Cutter piled on the
pressure.
Early in the second period Culter had strong claims for a penalty when
Martin Shand was shoved in the area and this was to be the striker’s
last piece of action as he was replaced by Graham Cadger. With 66
minutes gone Scott Knox came to Culter’ rescue when he brilliantly saved
a Scott Mckay piledriver. Moments later Peter Stewart replaced Chris
Mountford but there was a bust up in the Culter box following a hotly
disputed corner for the home side. The home side should have pulled one
back in the 70w’ minute but substitute Chris Courage missed an open
goal. With the minutes ticking away Mike Ord, on for John Brown, headed
over with the goal at his mercy from a perfect Peter Stewart cross.
Hermes got a consolation in the last minute when Grant Campbell
scrambled the ball over the line.

Saturday 12th April
Culter progressed in yet another cup but won few plaudits in a dour game
at a wet Crombie Park after the match was switched at the last minute as
the opponents pitch was unplayable.
Cutter should have taken the lead in the first minute when Gordon Farmer
had a good opportunity but Aaron McPherson made a hasty recovery and
booted the bail off the line. A few minutes later Martin Cooper bulleted
a header over from a Peter Stewart corner before Chris Mountford’s
effort was well saved by Neil Nicol in the ‘Vale goal. Gordon Farmer
followed up but bleezed the ball just over. The Deesiders were stunned
in the 21st minute when Gary Petrie picked up the ball on the edge of
the area and rifled a spectacular shot past Scott Knox. Cutter huffed
and puffed to grab an equaliser before the interval but the closest they
came was from a Peter Stewart blockbuster which was well saved. Just
before the half time whistle Andy Sim replaced the injured Adam Wilson
for Culter.
With barely 3 minutes of the second period gone a cross-cum- shot from
Andy Sim rattled off the post and bar and into the net to throw Culter a
lifeline. A minute later Chris Mountford darted free but his clever
attempt skinned the post. The visitors were defending stoutly so Culter
sent on George McBain and Graham Cadger in place of Peter Stewart and
Chris Mountford but the fresh blood did little to enhance the fragmented
play so penalties were inevitable.
In the penalty shoot out stand in keeper Scott Knox was the hero when he
saved Islavale’s last penalty from Dod Simmers. Penalty Result: Culter:
