In a scrappy and sometimes ill tempered match, Cutter eased their fixture
backlog slightly by losing out to East End in the 1st round of the ATR Group
Cup.
McBain tried his luck from 25 yards in the opening minute and the ball just
dipped over the bar. Riches was then smartly off his line to save at the
feet of Yates. Culter went ahead in the 12th minute when Shand’s 22-yard
free kick was spilled by Cameron and fell nicely at the feet of Peter
STEWART who had the easy task of tapping the ball into the net. Riches was
again quick off his line to deny Spalding with the midfielder’s late
challenge earning him a booking. Spalding found himself in space but duffed
the ball welt wide. Mountford's well driven cross was headed over from close
range by Shand and then Rattray blasted high over the bar after Cameron made
a mess of collectin9 Shand’s cross. The face of the game changed for Cutter
in a mad eight minute spell when, in the 38th minute Spalding’s free kick
was met by Kris HARRIS who flicked the ball home. In the 44th minute the
head of Paul YATES powered Spalding’s corner home. In the next minute Cooper
tripped Wyness in the box to leave Paul YATES the task of scoring from the
penalty spot. Half Time: 3—1.
Riches did well to parry away Spalding’s fierce drive and then hold onto
Walker’s cross when under pressure. Shand picked out Mountford in the box
but his first time effort was easily saved by Cameron. Pressley had a great
block on Wyness as he looked certain to score but Cutter were back in the
game in the 62 minute when Brown’s cross struck Spalding on the arm. John
BROWN took the penalty and despite the best efforts of the home ‘keeper the
ball found the net. Mountford, Shand and then Brown all had dangerous
crosses into the box, which were well dealt with by the home team.
Spalding’s shot on the turn caused Riches to get down well to smother the
ball at the second attempt before Brown’s low cross into the box found
Stewart who flicked the ball past Cameron but also past the post. Riches was
again called into action turning Booth’s well-hit shot round the post.
Pressley headed a Brown corner inches wide in the final minutes but East End
held out to advance into the next round.
