The overnight snow resulted in the postponement of our Norsco Regional Cup 2
Round Tie due to be played against Islavale at Simpson Park, Keith,
yesterday. In view of our backlog of fixture this is a cancellation we could
well have done without.
Cults Cup Coup. Congratulations go to Cults Academy Senior FC — their
delighted Coach Brian Angus reports:“ Cults Academy Senior Football Team Are
Going To Play At Hampden’.
In the semi final of the Scottish Cup, played at Stenhousemuir on Wednesday
19 March, Cults Seniors defeated Holycross Secondary from Hamilton after a
dramatic penalty shootout. This now means that they will play at Hampden
Park on Tuesday 29 April, 7.OOpm kick off.
The semi final was extremely exciting and incident packed. Holycross were by
far the stronger team in the first half and deservedly led 1-0 at halftime.
It certainly was a game of two halves with Cults dominating mo of the play
in the second half. However despite twice hitting the bar, with ten minutes
remaining, Holycross still held the upper hand. Cults took off a defender
and played with three strikers. The centre half was pushed upfield and
indeed it was Captain Jamie Wells who equalised with the latest kick of the
game in the 92 minute!
The game immediately went to penalty kicks. After the first five penalties
from each side, the game was still level. Sudden death penalties resulted in
all eleven Cults players taking kicks. The match remained tied. Mark Tweed
then came up to take his second penalty and blasted the ball into the net.
The next Holycross player had his penalty saved by keeper Fraser Borthwick.
Cults were through to their first national cup final.
All players should be congratulated for their first class attitude, effort
and commitment displayed throughout not just the semi final but in all
matches played.
