Culter managed to collect all three points in a tense
game at Crombie Park. They now lie 5th in the Super League table but
inevitably with fifteen league games remaining mid-week games are certainty.
This along with the fact that the Deesiders are still in three cup
competitions will put the pressure on Bobby Gray’s playing pool.
United started to the fore when Mike Brown sent in a zipping shot but Carson
Riches reacted brilliantly and dived low to push the ball to safety. Soon
after the home side had a decent chance when Chris Mountford was through on
goal but he dallied and the chance was gone. In the early stages play was
fluctuating from end to end and Ricky Home in the United goal did well to
hold a swinging Peter Stewart corner. Moment later Mark Young of Formartine
had an opportunity from a Stuart Shinnie free kick but he failed to find the
target. The Champions went ahead in the 23id minute when a Peter Stewart
free kick was smashed against the post by Martin Shand and a delighted
Murray Rattray was on hand to knock the ball home from close range. With
half an hour gone Chris Mountford tried his luck with a bender from a great
Donny Adam ball but’ his try whizzed past the post. Cutter were now
beginning to assert a considerable amount of pressure and Ricky Home
produced a smashing tip over from a Chris Mountford header following good
lead up work b, Adam Wilson. Just before the break the visitors were awarded
a dubious penalty when Adam Wilson and Ross Forsyth collided in the box but
once the brouhaha had died down Mark Young stepped up to send Carson Riches
the wrong way to level the match.
The Deesiders regained the lead minutes into the second period when Chris
Mountford acrobatical attempted a scissors kick but despite the connection
being unclean the bait crept over the line. Soon after Ryan Pressley came on
for Martin Cooper but it was Martin Shand who sought to put the match beyond
the visitors when he latched on to a Ricky Home cliff but his try failed to
find the target. George McBain then came on for Gordon Farmer but it was
Adam Wilson who tried his tuck but his blistering effort was blocked in the
area as the ball speed goalwards. United were almost thrown a lifeline
moments later when a Ryan Presslie head back was met by Matt McLeod but his
parting effort went woefully wide. Andy Sim then replaced Graham Cadger and
the wee man almost made an immediate impact with some neat footwork but his
final delivery left a little to be desired. In time added on United were
reduced to ten men when Stuart Craib was shown a straight red for hurling a
torrent of abuse at the referee.
