Culter progressed to
the semi-finals of the Inter Regional Cup with a fine display against
ArbroatF despite having 9 players missing through unavailability injury or
being cup tied. Manager Bobby Gra) still managed to field a strong looking
side but had only two subs on the bench including AssistanManager Gary Thow
who came on in the second half and showed a touch and determination belyinc
his advancing years. Recent signing Michael Ord also came off the sidelines
to make his Culter debut The Deesiders now face Forfar West End, Broughty
Athletic or Carnoustie Panmuir in the semi finals On the league front
results went Culter's way with Dyce and Sunnybank losing whilst Ellon drew.
The Deesiders went
straight on the attack from the kick off with Donny Adam trying his luck
from outside the area but his attempt was high and mighty. With barely a
minute gone the home side went in fron when a Gordon Farmer cross was met by
Peter Stewart who tried to bury the ball but despite heroic: from Alan
Cormack in the Arbroath goal Chris Mountford was on hand to lash the ball
into the empt) net. A few minutes later Adam Wilson was lucky to escape with
a talking to as he howked down Gar) McFarlane on the edge of the area. With
15 minutes on the clock Sporting Club had their first chance bu Ryan
Owbridge blasted well over from decent position. Soon after Chris Mountford
had a chance from E Gordon Farmer cross but he strayed just offside and the
same player almost found the target from E Donny Adam pass but this time his
header was well saved by the Arbroath `keeper. Chris Mountforc should have
doubled his tally on the half hour mark but he shot wide. At the other end a
fantastic cros~ from Ross Sievwright was almost met by Ryan Owbridge but the
ball skitted beyond him and away tc safety. Culter went two ahead as half
time approached when Murray Rattray picked out Martin Shanc with a long ball
and the hit man crossed for Graham Cadger who netted from close range.
Momentl later Carson Riches came to Culter's rescue when he pulled off two
spectacular saves within moments o each other to keep the two goal lead
intact.
Culter got off to a
flyer at the start of the second period when a great ball from Chris
Mountford founc Gordon Farmer who tapped the ball home. A few minutes later
Carson Riches pulled off anothe acrobatic save as Sporting Club pushed to
get back into the game. The feat was repeated at the othe end when Alan
Cormack sailed through the air to deny Chris Mountford his second from a
John Browr corner. Mid way through the half Arbroath got a what proved to be
no more than a consolation wher Ross Sievwright produced a cracker from well
out and the ball soared past the diving Carson Riche; and whistled into the
back of the net. A little while later super play from Graham Cadger set up
Chri; Mountford but his parting effort was manure. With the tie won Culter
sent on Mike Ord for Peter Stewar and with his first touch he tested the
visiting `keeper but the Arbroath man gathered the ball well. With < few
minutes remaining Gary Thow came on for John Brown and he contributed with
some strong tacklinc and not a few deft touches.
