Culter eased into the
4th round of the GA Engineering Inter-Regional Cup with an emphatic win over
Super League Rivals Maud. The Deesiders now face Arbroath Sporting Club at
home in the 4th Round on the 8th March. Manager Bobby Gray rung the changes
for the game with loan signing Davis Angus making his debut at the heart of
the defence.
The opening exchanges
were eaksy peaksy with neither side threatening to make a breakthrough. Out
of the blue a fantastic John Brown cross was bulleted home from the head of
Martin Shand to open the scoring in the 13th minute. Several minutes later
the same player almost doubled Culter's advantage but Rich Ligertwood was on
hand to boot the ball off the line. Gordon Farmer then went on a mazy run
but his rising drive flew just over with `keeper Paul Leask clutching at
thin air. Culter were beginning to dominate and the Maud `keeper did well to
stop a good Graham Cadger effort. With 35 minutes gone John Brown tried his
luck from well out on the right but his dipping volley flashed just wide.
With half time rapidly approaching Gordon Farmer shook of a posse of markers
and squared the ball to Martin Shand who tapped the ball home from close
range.
At the beginning of the
second period Gavin Middleton of Maud flashed a drive goalwards but Andy
Campbell, on the line, hoofed the ball away to safety. Several minutes later
Carson Riches was called into action and he produced a stunning save from
the left foot of John Usher to deny Maud a goal. Debutant David Angus then
went surging forward but he was denied by a good challenge from Ian Arthur.
Moments later a dipping Steve Rintoul corner was headed narrowly past by
Danny Craib as Culter looked for a third. That goal was not long in coming
when Gordon Farmer went on another decent run and Graham Cadger had the
simplest of tasks to knock the ball into an empty net. Culter then sent on
Colin Craik for Ryan Pressley and Chris Mountford replaced Graham Cadger but
the fourth came courtesy of an absolute peach of a free kick from distance
from Adam Wilson which left the Maud `keeper bewildered. Near the end Maud
pressed for a consolation but both John Willox and Zander Davidson scorned
decent opportunities.
