Culter went on the
rampage against potential title challengers Maud with an emphatic win but
the visitors can take a great deal of hope from especially their first half
performance when they competed well but defensive lapses let them down. A
minute's silence was observed before the game in memory of the 35-year-old
Motherwell Captain Phil O'Donnell whose tragic untimely death united the
world of football in grief.
Culter started on the
ascendancy with Chris Mountford probing but his speculative effort was
deflected behind for a corner. New Culter signing George McBain was looking
prominent and he got his name on the score sheet on his debut with 14
minutes gone when he latched onto a John Brown pass and spirited the ball
into the back of the net past the despairing Paul Leask. Maud were not to be
outdone and almost grabbed the leveller soon after but Ian Murray's clever
free kick cannoned off the bar and away to safety. Moments later Ritchie
Ligertwood had another chance to equalise but he blasted over from good
position. Chris Mountford then tried to get the Deesiders further ahead but
his low shot was easily gathered by the `keeper. The Champions eventually
went two up in the 28th minute when John Brown weaved some magic down the
left and his pin point cross was met by the flying Martin Shand who bulleted
a headed beyond Paul Leask and high into the net. Culter were dealt a blow
soon after when George McBain had to be helped off and he was replaced by
Graham Cadger but it was Ryan Pressley who almost made it three but his
dipping strike nestled on the roof of the net. Culter appeared on easy
street with three minutes to half time when John Brown once again found
space on the left and Martin Shand had the easiest of opportunities to head
home number three from deep inside the area.
Early in the second
period Chris Mountford had a great opportunity to put Culter further ahead
but he headed wide from good position. The same player had another
opportunity in the 54th minute when he was homing in on goal but he was
pushed in the area by Steve Powell and Referee Veitch pointed to the spot
instantly. Up stepped Andy Campbell on his return to action and he made no
mistake from 12 yards. Chris Mountford should have been awarded another
penalty minutes later when he was held back in the box but the referee
appeared to be unsighted and play continued but the home side were not to be
outdone and added number five when John Brown completely flummoxed the
`keeper with a magnificent chip from well out. The visitors gained a
consolation in the 75th minute when a well struck Ian Murray free kick
ricocheted off the bar and into the back of the net. The visitors were once
again breached when an Andy Sim cross finally found John Brown and he
expertly lobbed the `keeper from just inside the area to send Culter into
raptures. Culter added their seventh late on when Steve Robertson combined
with Graham Cadger and the latter made no mistake from close range.
