30 Years Ago. On
Saturday 31stDecember 1977 Culter drew 2 - 2 with Cove Rangers in an Amateur
Division 1 game at Cove. Our team that Hogmanay afternoon was-.
K Davidson; G Galashan,
G Gauld; R Westland, P George, G Spry; R Smith, D Jamieson, G Stuart, I
MacDonald, A Watt; Substitutes: R Clark and G Scott
The Referee was John H
Wilson and the attendance was 87. Our scorers were Graham Spry (10 mins)
an( Ronnie Smith (66 mins). My match report started - "The last game of
1977 was played in calm conditions with the oil scene being reflected in the
low setting sunset."
I published my Weekly
Bulletin on both Sundays 25 December 1977 and 1 January 1978 and went round
Culter with over 100 deliveries with our Sunday team (with many drams en
route -not quite over 100!). Our Weekly Sweepstake £50 Prize was won
outright by Gordon Morrison on Christmas Day. There were no
Sweepstakes on Sunday 1 January 1978 as the Sunday Post, which we used for
our winning numbers, was not published on New Year's Day.
We had free dates on Saturdays 26 December 1987 and 2 January 1988. Junior
FA newcomers Culter played a couple of Friendly Fixtures at Crombie Park
against Premier Division sides Lewis United and East End resulting in
friendly score-lines, both being drawn. On Sunday 27 December 1987 we
drew 0 - 0 with Lewis United and on Wednesday 30 December 1987 we were
drawing 1 - 1 when the match was abandoned during the rain which started at
the beginning of the game and gradually became atrocious. Our Sunday
Sweepstake Prize had increased to £60 and was won outright by Helen Brown on
Boxing Day. Culter were drawn against Stonehouse Violet in the Scottish
Junior Cup on Saturday 9 January 1988 at Stonehouse for the start of an epic
3rd Round struggle. The press photo reproduced below was
captioned:"On their marks for Scottish Junior Cup glory are in-form Culter
trio (left to right) Neil Bremner, Peter George and Murray Bird pictured
with the rest of their team-mates during a training session before
Saturday's crunch match with Stonehouse Violet."
