Culter crashed out of
their third cup competition in successive weekends in a match which never
reached the heights. Prior to the kick of both sets of players held up
placards which stated "Sholw Racism the Red Card" as part of an initiative
from the SFA and SJFA. This was accompanied by a announcement over the
Crombie Park tannoy from President Doug Jamieson.
It is back to auld
clathes and porridge for Culter following this ignominious defeat by
Bonnyrigg Rose who themselves were no great shakes and the Deesiders now
must pick themselves up for the challenges that lie ahead. With the Super
League always a priority Culter can now start playing catch up.
Rose started on top as
Culter struggled to shake off the disappointment of last week's "Scottish"
defeat at the galloping Mark Robertson tested Carson Riches with a low shot
which the `keeper held low down. Moments later Rose were awarded a free kick
on the edge of the area following an agricultural challenge fro Murray
Rattray but Riches was equal to Jock Elliot's low struck effort. Elliot
continued his early impressive form when he cutely lobbed Riches to open the
scoring although he looked about a light year offside. Th seemed to shake
the home side out of their reverie with Andy Sim releasing Chris Mountford
but Jam( Morrice just got enough on the ball to send it behind for a corner.
Soon after Rose `keeper Gary Maley ar defender Craig Meikle got themselves
into a kirn following a long ball but nobody from Culter was on hand 1
capitalise. At the other end Rattray had to throw himself at Grant Killin's
attempt to send the ball behind for corner. Elliot then tried to test Riches
but his free kick flew well over before Culter had their best chance of th
match thus far when Steve Rintoul picked out Mountford but his header from
good position squirted wide Culter were gradually getting back into the
game, without really threatening, and won a series of corners bl they didn't
test the giant Maley in the Rose goal.
Rose might have gone
further ahead at the start of the second period when Dave Burrell picked ol
Robertson but his header went just over. Robertson then tried to cut Gordon
Farmer in half on the left han edge of the area and from the free kick from
John Brown Rattray's header was deflected behind for a corne Riches was soon
called into action again when he produce a fantastic save from Burrell to
keep Culter in th game. For long periods Culter parked in the Rose half but
they were caught by a sucker punch mid ws through the half when a decent
shot was parried by Riches and the inrushing Robertson had the simplest i
tasks of pushing the ball into the empty net. Culter sent on Danny Craib at
the restart with Coin Craik movir into midfield and soon after Peter Stewart
replaced Graham Cadger to try and inject some life into the gam, Craik
almost made an immediate impact when he surged forward before releasing
Stewart but the hit m,,, made a complete hash of his shot and it stotted
harmlessly behind for a goal kick. Steve Robertson came c for Brown late on
but the damage had already been done. Culter did have a couple of late
chances but Cra fired wide from good position and Rintoul brought out
Maley's only real save of the match.
