On a cold gloomy day
at Hillhead Centre it was a gloomy result for Culter in the dreaded penalty
shoot out after an exciting Grill League Cup Final.
Culter took the lead
in the first minute. The Sunnybank defence totally missed Pirie's long
clearance and the ball fell perfectly for John BROWN to side step Sweeney
and place the ball into the net. Brown then crossed for Shand whose header
was saved by Sweeney at the second attempt. Sunnybank got back on level
terms when Fraser fed in Neil REID who slipped the ball past Pirie after 19
minutes had been played. Culter replied with Mountford's header being
blocked by Hendry but the Deesiders went in front again after 27 minutes
when Brown's corner was cleared as far as Ryan PRESSLEY who rifled the ball
into the net from 20 yards giving Sweeney no chance. Craik produced a
great tackle to deny Crombie as he looked certain to score and then it was
Brown's turn to deny Greig as he homed in on goal. Mountford's header from
Shand's cross was easily dealt with by the `Bank `keeper before a Pressley
header cleared the danger to again deny Crombie. Shand did have the ball in
the `Bank net just on half-time but was judged to be offside.
Half Time: Sunnybank 1
v Culter 2. .
Brown cut in from the
left and sent in a terrific shot that was deflected wide then Craik's
goal-bound shot was also blocked. Wilson was short with a pass back and
Bartlett's lob beat Pirie but drifted just wide of the post. Pirie
was now becoming the busier of the two `keepers and produced saves from Reid
and McAlister before watching Steele's header just clear the crossbar.
Pirie easily saved Johnston's daisy cutter in the 71St minute but could do
nothing in the next minute to prevent Ally REID's 18 yard shot flying into
the net. In the last minute Bartlett had a great chance to finish the game
when he was clean though on Pirie but amazingly shot wide of the
target. Rintoul then tried his luck in injury time but shot
straight to Sweeney from the edge of the box to conclude the game and onto
penalties.
Culter lost 5-4 with
Mountford taking our second penalty forcing a good save from Sweeney and
BARTLETT of Sunnybank scoring the winner to the delight of the Sunnybank
support. The spot kick scorers for Culter were John Brown, Murray Rattray,
Colin Craik and Steve Rintoul whilst on target for Sunnybank were Neil Reid,
Scott Johnston, Ally Reid, Tommy Robertson and Bartlett.

Culter Cour:e~. Thanks
to the Culter Courier Editor Marjory Skinner for accommodating my longer
than usual Culter y FC article in the November 2007 issue, the 30th
Anniversary Edition. Culter YFC also gave us prominence in their
article headed "Culter Boys becoming hot - property!" and stated "Culter YFC
recently has been supplying ball-boys to ~ Culter Juniors in their recent
historic Scottish Cup match played at Crombie Park, Culter. The players
from the U15s team should be considered good-luck mascots as Culter Juniors
won 7 - 0 to advance to the next round! Their excellent behaviour
has put them in demand for the future home matches where they will be
rewarded with half time strength-enhancing local meat pies!"
