Culter moved into the
final of the Grill League Cup with a fine victory over last year's winner
Turriff. Despite the atrocious conditions and the loss of Graham Cadger to a
straight red, card early in the second half the Deesiders thoroughly
deserved their victory.
The Super League
Champions started on the upper hand with both John Brown and Murray Rattray
going close before Ross Buchanan in the United goal pulled of a fine save
from a Brown free kick As the conditions deteriorated rapidly Martin Pirie
pulled off a smashing stop from Leigh Henderson before Rattray had to react
quickly to clear a David MacKenzie shot off the line. With only 1( minutes
gone the game continued at a pulsating pace and Culter might have gone ahead
when Peter Stewart found Colin Craik but again Buchanan pulled off a good
save. Soon after a pinpoint Brown corner was headed just wide by Adam Wilson
before a Robbie Allan effort was well saved b) Pirie and Danny Craib was on
hand to boot the ball behind for a corner. United then had another
opportunity but Andy Sim raced back to avert the danger at the expense of
another corner. The Deesiders went ahead in fine style when Bruce Smith
picked up Brown wide on the right and he scurried down field before crossing
to Stewart who finished off the move with a clinical strike from just inside
the area. A few moments later Smith tested the keeper with a great strike
but Buchanan was equal to the task and brought out a great save. Culter were
now on the ascendancy and a Cadger strike was turned behind for a corner.
Early in the second
half Culter were dealt a blow when Cadger was red carded for an ill timed
tackle but this seemed to galvanise the visitors and they went further ahead
when Craik picked out Chris Mountford who drilled a great strike low into
the net. Culter almost went further ahead when Smith connected with a
Stewart corner but his thundering hit whistled just over the bar. Martin
Shand then replaced Stewart as Culter looked for the killer third and it
came soon after when Mountford fed the substitute who buried the ball behind
the keeper with a clinical low finish to send the Culter crowd into
raptures. The three goal cushion was short lived however as a long ball was
spilled by Pirie and Henderson was on hand to poke the loose ball into the
back of the net. Manager Bobby Gray then sent on fresh legs in the shape of
Phil McCall and Steve Robertson for Rattray and Mountford respectively. In
the dying minutes Culter put together a good move involving Robertson and
Shand which was worked to Craik but once again Buchanan pulled of a stunning
save to deny Culter a fourth.
