Culter progressed into
today's Scottish Junior Cup draw for the 2nd round with penalty kicks having
to decide the outcome after an entertaining 90 minutes. Martin Pirie being
the hero, saving three of the penalty kicks.
Culter got off a great
start after only 3 minutes. Campbell's free kick was completely missed by
the home defence and fell to MOUNTFORD. He controlled the ball,
turned then unleashed an unstoppable shot past Carr. Culter were denied a
second ten minutes later when Brown's well driven free kick was flicked goal
bound by Mountford only for the home 'keeper to produce a great reflex save
and tip the ball over. Another cross from Brown was completely missed by
Carr but Farmer's free header sailed over as Culter continued to press.
Culter doubled their advantage in the 21st minute, Brown picking out Craik's
surging run into the box, who in turn cut back the ball to the onrushing
MOUNTFORD who side footed the ball into the net from 8 yards. Minutes later
Campbell denied Buchanan with a great sliding challenge with the resultant
corner being punched clear by Pirie. Vale were not to be denied and in the
33rd minute pulled one back, King picked out Gourlay on the wing and his
deep cross was headed home by FILSHIE from close range. Then FILSHIE squared
the match after he tapped home Gourlay's cross in the 41 st minute. Filshie
nearly made it a hat trick on the stroke of half time but just failed to
connect with another Gourlay cross. Half Time: 2 - 2.
Vale started the
second half on the attacr; and Martin saw his shot -N-0m just inside the box
crash back off the post. Farmer then skipped past a couple of defenders and
squared to Craik whose effort was well saved by the home `keeper. Stewart
flicked the ball to Mountford but his shot failed to bother Carr as it flew
over the bar. Martin and Gourlay combined well but Gourlay's effort was well
held by Pirie. Rattray just failed to connect with Brown's well struck cross
into the box as both teams looked for a winner. Pirie had to be smart off
his line to clear the danger with Montague in close attendance. Pirie was
called on into action again when he brilliantly palmed away Ross's close
range header. Craik saw his header cleared off the line by King before Brown
and Sim both tried their luck from distance but the game finished level and
into penalties.
