This week's Grill games
produced two tousy ties. In the absence of Match Reporter Ian "Kip"
McKenzie, abroad on business and Deputy Match Reporter Gus Johnstone, on
holiday, I reported on the East End game and when I too was missing, Gordon
Morrison provided details of the Formartine United match.
On a lovely sunny
evening Culter kept up the good start to the season with all 3 games
won. Scoring hero was Captain Murray Rattray with a brace. In the 2"d
minute Peter Stewart raced through but fired over. After neat play by
Graham Cadger the ball broke to Martin Shand whose close range try was
blocked by `keeper Mark Robinson after 6 minutes had been played. Next
minute a Gordon Farmer corner was headed narrowly past by Graham Cadger.
After 10 minutes had been played Mark Robinson did well to stop a Martin
Shand header on the goal-line. A 13th minute John Brown comer was headed
narrowly over by Graham Cadger. A minute later a Martin Shand header went
just past the upright. A dangerous East End cross was headed out for a
corner by Murray Rattray in 22 minutes. A couple of minutes after
another tricky ball into the Cutter goalmouth it was turned out for another
comer by Andy
Cowell. Next minute Mark Keith had a great chance but Gordon Farmer raced
back to intercept him. In the 27,t' minute Steve Rintoul sent a free kick
high into the goalmouth and Murray Rattray headed the ball into the corner
of the net to open the scoring. Martin Pirie pulled off a fine save to
stop a Richard Wyness drive in 34 minutes. Half Time: 1 - 0.
Three minutes after the
restart East End were breaking through but were stopped by a timely Andy Sim
tackle. In 51 minutes John Brown cut the ball across to Murray Rattray who
shot past. Ryan Youngson was the first of many bookings by Referee
Beaton in the 55th minute. Bruce Smith replaced Peter Stewart in the 57th
minute. On the hour mark Richard Wyness fired the equaliser into the corner
of the net. Next minute Bruce Smith was booked. Ryan Youngson
brought down Bruce in the 63rd minute and was sent off for incurring his
second booking. A fine Gordon Farmer cross found Graham Cadger in the
65th minute but he failed to connect. Two minutes later in a repeat
performance Gordon Farmer set up Graham Cadger but he shot weakly into Mark
Robinson's arms. In the 68th minute a cross went to Bruce Smith at the far
post but his try was blocked then broke to Murray Rattray who scrambled the
ball over the goal-line for what proved to be the match winning goal. A
minute later Richard Wyness and Andy Cowell were booked following a clash.
Chris Mountford came on for Martin Shand in the 715t minute. A minute
after Graham Cadger was booked for dissent then Ryan Smith was yellow carded
for a foul on Steve Rintoul. East End made a double substitution after 78 minutes had
been played. An 89t'
minute John Brown free kick was held by Mark Robinson. Next minute a Gordon
Farmer shot was blocked by `keeper Robinson. The game ran into injury time
and in the 93~d minute Keith Walker had only Martin Pirie to beat but
fortunately for us he contrived to shoot past when it seemed easier to
score.

On a dull drizzly damp
day there was a good atmosphere between these two leading Clubs. It was
an evenly contested game between two evenly balances sides. There was
nothing of note to report except the competitive spirit which was maintained
during the 90 minutes. The goalkeepers were not called on to perform
any heroics but each `keeper had to be on top of his form in the second half
to deal with cracking on-target shots.
On the half hour mark
Booth suffered an injury and took no further part in the game. Scoring was
confined to fate on in the game when first Forsyth of Formartine scored in
66 minutes and with only five minutes left on the clock substitute Mountford
netted a welcome equaliser. In the 67th minute Shand and Rintoul had been
replaced by Mountford and Smith. Young was sent off in the last minute of
the match.
