Former Dons legend
Duncan Shearer took his Jags team to Crombie
Park for a pre season match and
both teams gave a creditable display. Culter boss Bobby Gray gave new
signings John Brown, Steve Robertson and Chris McCall their debuts whilst
Graham Cadger is recovering from injury. Also back in the home line up was
Andy Cowell who looked fresh following a horrific injury picked up last
season. Culter were marginally the better team in the first half but the
Jags shaded it in the second period. The Deesiders started on top with
Gordon Farmer flying down the left but his skytting cross was just too long
for Martin Shand. At the other end man of the match Tony Low sent in a good
cross but John Brown was on ' hand to head the ball back to keeper Darren
Strong in the Culter goal. Jags then won a couple of corners and Lewis
MacKinnon perhaps should have done better than head wide from deep inside
the area. Thistle were now having the better of the game but Darren Strong
came to the rescue with a super save from Craig MacMillan before Culter came
back into it when Martin Shand set up Peter Stewart but his header was well
saved by Kevin Main in the Buckie goal. Moments later Culter went in front
with a goal of the highest quality when Peter Stewart crossed for John Brown
who pinged the ball back across the goal to Martin Shand who buried a fine
header past the Jags keeper. Thistle were stung into action by the reversal
and Tony Low set up Craig MacMillan but his effort bounced off the top of
the bar and out for a goal kick. With 36 minutes of the half gone a Peter
Stewart shot was parried by Kevin Main but Martin Shand's follow up went
agonisingly over with the keeper stranded. Culter were gaining in confidence
and near the end of the period a blistering Peter Stewart shot was blocked
at the expense of a comer.
Jags came out for the
second half in determined fashion and were soon back on level terms when
Steve Bruce found the impressive Tony Low and he sent an unstoppable shot
past stand-in keeper Darren Strong. Soon after both sides made a rake of
changes and this disrupted the flow of the game but this was understandable
as both managers needed to give the substitutes a run out in the build up to
the season. Midway through the half Buckie took the lead and once again it
was Tony Low who did the damage when he stepped inside from the right and
sent a beauty low into the bottom of the net past the diving keeper. Near
the end of the match Culter piled on the pressure in an attempt to get back
into the game and came very close when a flashing John Brown strike just
flew past the upright with the keeper nowhere.
