Culter kept their title
aspirations on track with a stunning victory over now relegated Glentanar.
The Deesiders were in sparkling form and now require a single point from
their two remaining games to secure an unprecedented fourth top league title
on the trot. Even referee Brain Braidwood commented on the quality of play
Culter produced. A rare compliment indeed from the man in black.
The match started off
at a frantic pace and Danny Craib was yellow carded for a howler of a tackle
on Tommy Willox of Glens. Still in the first minute or two Gordon Farmer
slithered and slewed past a bemused defence then rounded the `keeper before
striking for goal but a relieved Ryan Morrison booted the ball off the line.
The Deesiders didn't have long to wait for the opener when Kevin Christie
jigged across the edge of the area before firing a daisy cutter hard and low
into the back of the net in the fifth minute. Glens were stunned by this but
just could not get the ball out of their own half and went further behind in
the 12th minute when a Peter Stewart cross was met by Chris Mountford and
the in form striker despatched a clinical strike past the bemused Gavin
Robertson for number two. Not long after Andy Sim joined in the fun but his
cute chip was deflected by a defender and fell into the arms of the grateful
`keeper. Sim then went rampaging down the right before crossing to Martin
Shand but his flicked header was grasped by Robertson at his right hand
post. Stewart then went storming through the middle but with the goal in his
sights John Hardy managed to get in a wonderful tackle to deny the Drumoak
Dart. Glens eventually put together an attack but Willox's long ranger went
woefully wide of the post. At the other end a crisp Colin Craik drive was
spilled by Robertson but he recovered as Mountford poised to pick up any
loose ends. It was an understatement to say it was all Culter at this stage
but Glens huffed and puffed to get back into the game but Culter were first
to everything. With the half time whistle rapidly approaching a wicked
Stewart cross was punched away to safety by the overworked Glens `keeper but
there was nobody on hand to take advantae.
The game was all over
in the 1S minute of the second period when Farmer danced around on the edge
of the box before setting up Peter Stewart who curled an absolute clinker
round the bemused Glens rearguard and high into the net. There was now way
back now for the visitors but the persistent Willox chanced his luck from
range but his decent strike zoomed well past the post. Dave Calder then
replaced Shand but it was captain fantastic Murray Rattray who next went
close with a whistling drive but Glens did have a half chance but Christie
was coolness personified when he raced back to dribble the ball out of
defence to deny the visitors. Craib was then replaced by Steve Rintoul and
the left pegger had the ball in the net from a Farmer pass but he had just
strayed offside. Near the end Greg Whyte came on for Peter Stewart as Culter
gave Glens a lesson in the art of football. With the gloaming approaching
both trainers had to come on for the injured Steve Tait when he clashed with
Rintoul who earned a yellow for the challenge.
