Culter
completely dominated Hillhead the team that put paid to their hopes of
retaining the Grill League Cup. The Deesiders should have possibly scored
more but this win strengthens their hopes of winning a fourth successive
Super League title although there is a long way to go yet. Culter now lie
2nd in the table with 3 games in hand over leaders Stonehaven and are 2
points adrift of them.
Hillhead started brightly enough and Martin Pirie was forced into a decent
save from Neale Allan in the 3`d minute. Culter then put together a flowing
move with Peter Stewart sending in a good cross for Kevin Christie but he
headed wide of Mark Kerr's post before the same players combined again and
this time Christie's shot did not have enough loft and Kerr saved easily.
Culter kept their foot on the throttle and a decent try from Greg Whyte was
booted off the line by Paul Cheyne in the 14th minute. A minute later Chris
Mountford had a go as Culter camped in the Hillhead half but on this
occasion his effort went wide. Stewart and Christie were combining well for
the home side and the latter perhaps should have done better than fire wide
from inside the area. Christie had a further opportunity with half an hour
gone but this time his header failed to find the target from a Whyte cross.
Murray Rattray then sent Whyte clear on the left but his dipping cross was
well intercepted by Kerr in the Hillhead goal. Coiin Craik then picked out
Any Sim scurrying. down the right but his powerful try was howked away as
the visitors rhreatened to wilt under the pressure. Mountford then had. a
double chance as half time approached but his first attempt was pushed
behind for a corner and his second was well saved by Kerr.
The
second period started in the same vein as the first with Culter in total
control and Craik found Danny Craib deep in the area but he could not find
the net. With all the pressure Culter could not afford to relax and Lee
Mason had a chance but the ever alert Andy Campbell was on hand to deny the
winger. Inevitably Culter took the lead and it was a strike of the highest
quality from Stewart that did the damage when he coolly lobbed Kerr to send
the home side ahead. Minutes later Martin Shand replaced Mountford as Culter
strived to add to their tally and although they had vastly superior
territorial advantage it took another clinical strike from Stewart late in
the match from a Bruce Smith pass to make sure that Hillhead went home empty
handed.
