Lewis Lumped

Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round - Lewis United 0 Culter 4 H-T 0-1 Scorers: Peter Stewart 45, Colin Craik 57, Murray Rattray 80, Andy Sim 88

Culter easily progressed to the 3rd round of the Scottish and await the third round draw which takes place on Sunday 12`h November. It was a fine performance at Chris Anderson Stadium but the final margin could have been bigger. Both sides were missing several players but this did not seem to affect the visitors.

The Deesiders started strongly when an Andy Cowell cross was met by Duncan Ord but the wee striker mishit and the ball trundled to safety. At the other end Helson sent in a dangerous cross which skipper Murray Rattray was happy to lump upfield before a flowing move involving Kevin Christie and Dave Calder saw the ball released to Peter Stewart but his left foot grounder skittered past the post. With 12 minutes on the clock a surging Gordon Farmer run was halted by a fine block by Gregor Moir. A few minutes later another Stewart turn ended up with his dangerous cross being gathered by Barry Park in the United goal before the big United custodian made a fine save from another Stewart attempt. Farmer then tried his luck as Culter continued to dominate but his parting shot found the side netting. Park came to the rescue for the home side with an acrobatic save from a great flashing Ord header from a Stewart Centre. With the pressure mounting Stewart went on another mazy run and this time his cross was met once again by Ord but his header slipped past the post. With the visitors camped in the home h: !f United a!most brol:;: away and it took a great run and interception by Ryan Presslie to deny United an opportunity. Culter went ahead on the stroke of half time when Rattray sent in a long ball for Stewart and he controlled the ball before sending a volley into the net past the flailing Park.

Stewart almost doubled his tally 3 minutes into the second period with a fantastic lob but the ball cannoned off the junction of the post and bar and away to safety. With 12 minutes of the half gone there was no way back for United when a fine ball by Ord found Colin Craik deep in the area and he composed himself before side footing the ball home. The bookings for United were now coming thick and fast as the frustration got on their players but it was Ord who almost added the third with yet another header but again it whistled wide of the post. This was Ord's last chance as he was replaced by Martin Shand but it was skipper Rattray who did the damage with a sparkling free kick from the edge of the area which curled over the wall and ripped into the back of the net. Danny Craib who had earlier replaced Farmer provided the ammunition for the fourth when he swung the ball over to Andy Sim, himself a replacement, and the young genius buifeted a wonderful header into the back of the net to completed the scoring.

Culter: Pirie, Cowell, Rattray, Calder, Campbell, Presslie, Craik, Stewart, Ord, Christie, Farmer.    Subs: Sim, Shand Craib, Smith, Knox.
