Culter strolled into the second round of
the GA Engineering Inter-regional cup with a rout of Elgin adversaries
Bishopmill United. It was easy going for the Deesiders as they went 2-0
ahead with only 8 minutes on the clock. The highlight of the tie was a
hat-trick from Gordon Farmer, the Huntly Harrier, who claims he got the
second but a wicked deflection took it over visiting keeper Barry
Andrews. Unfortunately the second half was a bit of a non event as
Culter found it difficult to put it together but all in all a pleasing
afternoon as Culter see them play
Dundee favourites Downfield in
the next round.
United belied their inferior position in
the opening minutes and forced two corners as Martin Pirie and co.
struggled to settle. However, in 6 minutes Culter strung together a
great move which saw Chris Mountford shoot just over from a Peter
Stewart cross. A minute later the home side took the lead when a Stewart
cross was chested down by Neil McRitchie to the fast establishing
Mountford who despatched a low ball into the net. Almost from the
restart Culter went two up when Gordon Farmer went on a meandering run
and his powerful shot was deflected over Barry Andrews in the `Mill goal
and into the net. Mountford almost added his second a few minutes
later as the game threatened to run
away from `Mill but this time Andrews made a fine save but the energetic
striker did get his second in the 14th minute when "e b:,llleted home a
superb cross from Farmer. United we;e really under the cosh at this
stage but it took a few more minutes for the fourth and this-time Farmer
was brought down in the box by Ramon Ralph and Dave Calder stepped up to
send the perfect penalty past the now despairing United custodian. A
stunned visiting side tried to get back into it from a Mike Dunn free
kick but Pirie easily saved Stuart Porter's header. Up to this point
McRitchie had been strangely subdued but was working hard and he had a
decent chance from a Mountford pass but desperate defending denied the
record scoring striker. With half time approaching Mountford nearly got
his hat-trick but was denied by a fine save by Andrews but Calder
followed up to add his own second as Culter went to the break on nap.
The start of the second half was as
miserable as the rapidly chilling overhead conditions but Culter
replaced Dave Calder and Colin Craik with Duncan Ord and Kevin Christie
in an attempt to spice up the game but it was Ord who earned a yellow
card when he peppered a `Mill player with a rash challenge. Andy Sim in
his first cometi back for a while was getting more adventurous down the
right and his dangerous cross was scooped away only as far as Murray
Rattray who sent Stewart free but his cross was just too speedy for
McRitchie. Ord did produce a nice bit of his customary footwork in the
79th minute when he dinked a neat ball through to Farmer and his deft
right foot flick somehow crept under the keeper and into the net. Barely
a minute later Farmer went on one of his jinking runs and finished in
fine style to complete the scoring. In the dying minutes Farmer was
replaced by Danny Craib as Culter strolled to victory.
