Culter live to fight another day after a
drab 0-0 encounter with Ayrshire League opponents Saltcoats Victoria.
The once proud "Seasiders" were well pleased with the outcome since they
were expecting a drubbing from the Deesiders but it was not to be. The
home side started fairly brightly without threatening as Culter took
time to get into their stride but the North side did put together the
first meaningful attack when Andy Thain squared the ball to Murray
Rattray who in turn fed Colin Craik but Jamie McKee, for the home side,
did well to block the shot for a throw in. With 10 minutes gone Vies had
a claim for a penalty turned down as Andy Campbell and Gary Madden
wrestled for the ball in the area but referee G. Aitken was having none
of it. A few moments later a quick free kick on the edge of the area for
the home side was picked up by Gary Madden but Ryan Pressiie recovered
to thwart the danger with a great tackle. Mid way through the half a
driving run_ by Davie Calder ended up with a deep cross which just
evaded Colin Craik as Culter looked for the opener. The Deesiders
dominated towards the break but it was dour stuff with neither keeper
called into action.
At the start of the second period Vies
missed a giorious opportunity to go ahead when Steven McLean fed Gary
Madden but the diminutive forward blazed the ball wide from good
position. At the other end Culter should have gone ahead when a terrific
Andy Cowell cross was met by the diving Martin Shand but his header from
a yard out struck the post and rebounded to safety. At this stage Culter
were getting stronger but they failed to test ex Arsenal keeper Ian
Seaton in the Vies goal until a glorious header from Martin Shand was
acrobatically saved by the custodian. Culter then sent on a posse of
substitutes as they attempted to get the win and Neil McRitchie should
have broken the deadlock from a Gordon Farmer cross but failed to find
the target from close range. In time added on Vies were awarded a free
kick on the edge of the area but Steven McLean's effort cannoned off the
wall and away to safety to leave the Ayrshire men with the long trip to
Culter next week.
