After a quiet start the game exploded in the 10th minute when Courage broke through, outstripping Scott and Pirie ran out of his box to bring him down to prevent him from scoring and was sent off. Scott donned the goalkeeper's jersey to deputise. The resultant free kick from Edmund was goalbound towards the far top corner of the net but was tipped over the bar by Scott. , Hamilton's corner was then fisted out by Scott.

In 14 minutes COURAGE dispossessed Pressley near the touchline and with Scott far out of his charge he hit the ball into the empty net. Two minutes later Sweeney ran out to beat Farmer to a through ball. Referee George had words with Christie following his 18th minute foul. Next minute a Hamilton corner was thumped out by Scott's fist: Courage was spoken-to by Referee George after a 24th minute foul on Craik. In the 27th minute Courage was through but Scott dived at his feet to save and the Hermes Centre Forward was booked for fouling him. - On the half hour mark Hamilton was next to have words of disapproval from the Referee. Next minute Thain did well to head the ball back to Scott from long distance as Edmund tried to take advantage. In the 33rd minute-Calder beat `keeper Sweeney in a race for the ball out near the wing to shoot it vainly towards the empty net and the loose bait was picked up by Craik whose shot towards the corner of the net was blocked by Freeland. A Duncan shot was deflected past for a comer in 35 minutes and a couple of minutes later Christie won Culter's first corner of the game. Morrison's resultant corner was fisted out by Sweeney. A minute before the interval a Keith header was easily held by Scott:-- -Half Time: 1 - 0: - Three minutes after the interval Courage went off injured but resumed quickly after attention. After a scramble in Culter's goalmouth in the 52nd minute a Mearns try on the turn was well held by deputy `keeper Scott. In another similar melee barely a minute later Courage shot narrowly past the bottom of the post. Scott fisted out a high ball for a corner in 54 minutes off which FREELAND headed home. Christie went down in the box in 56 minutes and appealed for a penalty but instead earned a booking from Referee George.

Two minutes afterwards Watson was booked for a foul on Morrison. Next minute Farmer was breaking through in the box but went down in a collision with Yeats resulting in a foul being awarded to Hermes. Culter gained two corners in succession after 62 minutes had been played. Immediately after Morrison was booked for a foul on Watson. In the 67th minute Culter fielded three substitutes - Ogboke, McRitchie and Smith to replace Christie, Morrison and Shand. A 69th minute Farmer try curled narrowly over the bar. Culter were stunned when HAMILTON took advantage of a defensive slip up to fire in a 3rd goal in 71 minutes. Right after this set-back McRitchie neatly set up Smith who shot over. Yeats was next to be booked when he fouled Craik in 73 minutes then Hermes were also reduced to 10 men when Courage was red-carded for a second bookable offence in the 75th minute. At this stage Campbell replaced Duncan. In 80 minutes EDMUND shot into the bottom corner of the near post as Scott dived in vain to try to save. Hermes then brought on Kirkwood for Keith. EDMUND was clean through and shot over Scott in 83 minutes to complete the Hermes nap-hand to compound Culter's day of misery. This was followed by Gabriel being fielded as substitute for Watson. Five minutes before the end McRitchie crossed to give Pressley a chance but the ball ran out of his reach and his outstretched shot went over the bar. In 88 minutes Freeland was booked for a foul on Ogboke. Off Farmer's free kick McRitchie headed over.
