Culter progressed to the
next round of the Inter Regional Cup with a decent victory over nearest
title challengers
Wilson's
XI. It was never going to be a great game with the conditions slippery
following a continued spell of frost. Enigmatic striker Chris Ogboke made
his first start of the season as Culter looked to get back on the winning
trail following last week's surprise reversal to East End.
In the early stages Culter
were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but Ogboke rifled the ball
against the wall. The visitors set their stall out early playing with a lone
striker but it was Mackenzie who almost provided the danger but Christie,
recalled to the starting line up, who made a good interception. The home
side should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when a Farmer cross fell
to Ogboke but the striker's shot fairly cannoned off the angle of the bar
and out to Thain but the defensive player headed the rebound just over.
Moments later it was Wilson's who had a chance when a good Morrison cross
was headed wide by Mackenzie as play swung from end to end. For a period the
game was interspersed by petty fouls mainly due to the skittery surface but
Culter took the lead with a goal of the highest quality when Morrison found
Thain lurking in the box and the veteran pushed the ball into the path of
Craik_who slotted a low right foot shot home
from near the spot.
This seemed to
catalyse the underdogs but they were sent
a warning-- when Steve Morrison, grandson of Gordon the ex Culter
President, was booked for shirt pulling. The town team then had a couple of
chances without troubling Pirie unduly as first Dillon had a weak attempt on
goal and the lanky Watt headed straight at the goalie. Culter were. looking
anxiously for the half time whistle when Cruickshank had a pop from well out
but the ball drifted harmlessly over.
Culter almost doubled their
advantage just after the break when Ogboke went on a typical surging run but
the keeper got his angles right and pulled off a first class save. The home
side were not to be denied and did go further in front in the 2nd minute of
the period when Shand went on a jinking run across the edge of the area and
he composed himself before sending a low curler into the bottom corner of
the net. Wilson's tried to change things soon after when they sent on new
signing Devine for Dillon but it was Culter who looked the more likely as
Craik found Ogboke but the best he could do was win a corner. The big
striker earned his corn a few minutes later when he raced back to follow
Cheyne, who had broken free, and tackled the
Wilson's
man to send the ball out for a throw in. With 28 minutes of the half gone
Culter almost were unassailable when Ogboke twisted and turned deep and his
perfect cross was met by Morrison but his header was headed off the line by
Sievwright with Kerr nowhere. The visitors were reduced to 10 men when
Morrison was shown his second yellow for a pique of petulance just over the
78th minute mark which should have been the end for the away side but
surprisingly they dominated the last few minutes as Culter sat back on the
lead. In the dying minutes Allan replaced the weary Farmer and the
impressive Scott of Culter was booked as Culter safely made into the next
round.
