Culter crashed out of the Regional Cup
against East End but they have only themselves to blame. The visitors finished the match
with nine men whilst the Deesiders missed a barrowload of chances. If there
is consolation to be had both Superleague games went in Culter's favour with
Bank's O Dee and Turriff both losing.
End started the livelier of the two sides
and Thain had to look lively to divert a Guyan cross behind. Soon after from
a corner Davies powered a drive just wide of Pirie's post before Rattray had
to clear a goal bound effort from Yeats off the line. Culter gradually came
into it and a neat Morrison was flicked goalwards by McRitchie but McDonald
was alert to the danger and saved well. Glass then had a half decent
opportunity but blazed over before Farmer was upended in the box but referee
McKenzie waved play on. Minutes later Farmer went on a direct run into the
box but his low shot was saved by the feet of McDonald. McKenzie of End was
then shown yellow before a terrific cross by Glass was desperately turned
behind by Stewart of the visitors. The Aberdeen side took a surprise lead in
the 35th minute when a Guyan cross evaded Thain and despite a
brave attempt by Rattray, Yeats put the ball into the net off the Culter
skipper. Culter huffed and puffed without creating much as the half time
whistle approached but they almost got the equaliser when a rising whistler
from Glass flashed just over with McDonald grasping thin air.
Culter pushed forward
from the resumption without bothering McDonald and company too much before
Ogboke replaced Glass as Culter tried to up the ante. End were-reduced-to-ten-men
soon after when McKenzie was given a second yellow for slicing McRitchie
down on the edge of the area and from the free kick Ogboke hammered the ball
into the wall. Culter ' were throwing everything forward now and a good
Morrisoil cross was met by McGZitchie but his dinking header went past the
upright. Thain then went rampaging up the park from defence and his
dangerous cross was almost put into his own net by McArthur. Rattray then
earned a yellow card before Craik came on for the injured Morrison before
Farmer had a good shot. saved by McDonald and Ogboke pounced on the rebound
but his try was booted off
the line. Farmer then found Ogboke again but this time the athletic striker
hightered at the vital moment and the chance was gone. End had their backs
to the wall now and did some desperate defending and only a magnificent save
by McDonald from a Shand header prevented Culter from drawing level. The
corners were coming thick and fast now and from one of these taken by
Farmer, Shand contrived to flick a header wide of target. End made a double
substitution in an attempt to stem - the tide with Marr and Robb coming on
in place of Davies and Guyan whilst Culter sent on Allan for Rattray. Allan
almost made an immediate impact when he took a quick free kick to McRitchie
but he bundled the ball just wide. McDonald once again performed heroics
when he saved well from an Ogboke try from a Calder pass. Soon after Thain
tried to show his forwards what to do when he went on a lung bursting run
but his parting shot flashed just over the bar. The End goal was leading a
charmed life and this time Craik should have scored from good position but
once again the ball whistled wide. End were reduced to nine men with seven
minutes remaining when Marr who had earlier been booked saw red and went for
an early shower. Culter kept pummelling the End goal as the tie slipped away
but it was just one of those days when nothing would go in.
