Culter climbed to the top of the Soccer World Super League for the first
time this season against a stuffy Banks O'Dee side who hardly
troubled Martin Pirie in the home goal. The victory sees Culter go
two points clear of Doe and three points ahead of Turriff United.
The game never reached the heights expected of a top of the table
clash but it was an important win for the Deesiders.
Both teams took
time to settle but Culter-were-the first to show when-they won a
couple of corners which Stewart took. From the second one Scott
pushed the ball narrowly wide of the target and a couple of minutes
later a
Calder shimmy allowed him space to cross for Morrison
but he headed wide in the 12th minute.
Dee did manage
to get into the Culter half at this stage and they won a throw in
which Christie intercepted and he fed the ball to Stewart who in
turn picked up B. Smith but the long serving star shot well over
from distance. It was all Culter now but they hardly threatened the
Dee keeper until Stewart was axed in the box and Calder
stepped up to execute the spot kick immaculately. This seemed to
rattle
Dee and the impressive Brownhill went rampaging up the wing, with
Craik in
his
wake, before sending
in
a cross which
Pirie
dealt with easily. At the other end Craik had a decent opportunity
but he drove the ball straight at Pennant. Moments later Smith sent
Shand scampering free but Middler recovered to send the ball behind
for a corner. Morrison then slipped his marker before picking out
Stewart's driving run but the speedy forward was adjudged to have
drifted offside. Not long before half time Morrison found Craik deep
in enemy territory but the ball fell to his weaker right foot and
the chance was gone. Just before the whistle Dee were dealt a blow
when C. Smith hobbled off injured and was replaced by Turnbull.
The start of the
second half was cagy but Culter went further ahead with ten minutes
of the period gone when a Morrison cross was taken by Stewart who
rattled the ball past the despairing Pennant.
Dee did have a chance a couple of minutes later when a
Carstairs attempt was cleared off the line by Scott who is beginning
to look like a commanding central defender. This was a brief respite
for Dee who were almost always on the back foot as Culter played
possession football to deny their close rivals any opportunity. The
talismanic Ogboke then replaced the hard working Shand but it was
the improving Sim who created Culter's next chance when he set up
Craik who in turn fed Stewart but Pennant pulled off a great save to
deny the Drumoak Dart. This was Stewart's last contribution as he
was replaced by Farmer There were a couple of other substitutions as
the game drew to a close but the score remained as it was.
Dee players
vented their anger at the final whistle for no apparent reason but
the fracas was soon quelled by both sets of management.
