Culter's rollercoaster season continued
when they capitulated to a hard working yet uninspiring Longside outfit.
Injuries continue to ravage the Deesiders but the cracks appeared on
Saturday as the home side were in Halloween mood giving possession away with
almost charitable status. The early exchanges gave no indication as to the
final outcome as Morrison fed Framer who headed on to McRitchie but his
header was easily saved by Simpson. With six minutes gone a penetrating run
by Ritchie was halted at the last gasp by skipper Rattray who was alert to
the danger. Longside were beginning to dominate possession without really
threatening until Calder was caught on the ball and Ritchie made the most of
the mistake by racing through before sending in a low ball for Christie who
dispatched the ball low into the net. The visitors had the opportunity to go
further ahead minutes later when Middleton raced free but he pulled his shot
for a bad miss. Eventually Culter began to get their act together and looked
to be trying to get into the game and almost did when Calder released Farmer
but he blazed well over from good position. McRitchie then set up Farmer and
this time he kept the ball down but it was deflected behind but referee
Lovie pointed for a goal kick. Culter had claims for a penalty in the 37th
minute when a powerful Shand drive struck a hand following an intricate move
involving Farmer and McRitchie but the claims 1.6/ere waved aside. Four
minutes later Culter did have the ball in the net courtesy of clever play
from McRitchie but he was adjudged to have strayed offside.
The opening period of the second half saw
a couple of clear cut chances when Ritchie of Longside missed a sitter
before Shand of Culter was clean through but he was pulled back for a
dubious offside. Culter kept pushing forward but were almost caught cold
when Reid was allowed the freedom of the area but Pirie reacted to pull off
a fine stop before Robertson fired just over at the other end. Longside
increased their advantage soon after when a wonderful chip from Christie
eluded Pirie before nestling in the back of the net. A few minutes later it
looked to be all over bar the shouting when Ritchie broke free, and with the
Culter defence absent without leave, he slotted home with ease. This
signalled the Culter management to send on Stewart and Allan for Farmer and
Calder and it paid dividends almost immediately as Smith found Stewart wide
on the right and the speedy sub sent in a perfect ball for
i Shand who buried the ball behind
Simpson from close range. Six minutes later Culter were right back in j it
when some wing wizardry from Stewart saw him free in the box again and when
he threaded the ball ' into the danger area Shand was on hand to thump the
ball home. The comeback was short lived
however as Longside broke away and with
Pirie well out of his charge Christie has the easiest of , chances to get
his hat trick. Culter pummelled the home goal in the remaining few minutes
but the damage was already done and a delighted Buchan side went home with
all three points.
