Culter slipped out of the Scottish at the
first hurdle in a game they should have won. Defensive errors contributed to
the exit against a side littered with ex professionals including Ray
McKinnon and Andy Dow. Windy conditions proved to be a leveller and now the
Deesiders are left to concentrate on local competitions. The match started
in a low key with neither side getting to grips with the wind until Stewart
forced a save out of Can-oll with a free kick from the edge of the area.
Culter had strong claims for a penalty in the 13th minute when Shand headed
down to McRitchie who tumbled in the box under pressure from Famam. Culter
took the lead in the 16t" minute when a long ball from the right by Collie
was latched onto by Shand who picked his spot behind Carroll. The home side
should have gone further ahead a few minutes later when a great Calder ball
found McRitchie free in the box but the burly hit man blasted over from good
position. Broughty got back into the match when Scott made a bad error
allowing Traynor to escape unattended into the box and the winger slid the
ball under the advancing Pirie and into the empty net. Two minutes later
Culter went ahead again with a goal of real beauty. Collie received a short
ball near the half way line and sauntered forward before sending a
thunderbolt from well out high over the flailing Carroll and into the back
of the net. The action until near half time was confined to the midfield
area as Culter looked to be heading in with a comfortable lead until a long
ball caught the Deesiders defence napping and Traynor was allowed to take
his time before picking out Kiddie inside the 6 yard box and he simply
tapped the ball home. In time added on Culter had what looked like a
stonewall penalty turned down when Carroll made contact with McRitchie deep
in the box but referee Duncan was miles from the action and waved play on.
Culter made the best possible start to the
second half when a Stewart comer was only partially cleared and when the
ball was returned to the danger area Rattray used his strength to bundle the
ball over the line. A few minutes later Culter should have had the tie
wrapped up when McRitchie released Shand in the area but with only the
keeper to beat he hit the ball straight at the Broughty custodian. The home
side paid the penalty for the miss a couple of minutes later when the Dundee
team were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and Kiddie stepped up
to belt a screamer round the wall and into the back of the net. This seemed
to spur on the visitors and McKinnon came close with a screamer which
fizzled just over. It looked as if it was going to be one of those days for
Culter when Robertson was axed just inside the area but the ref. who was
once again far from the action gave a free kick outside the box. From the
foul Stewart sent a curling ball into the box and it evaded all before going
inches wide of the back post. Craik then had a chance to put the Deesiders
back in front but Carroll pulled of a fine stop. The match looked to be
heading for a replay but Kiddie thought differently and stuck away a good
goal with Culter pressing forward for the winner. With the match beginning
to slip from the grasp of the favourites Cameron and Framer replaced Shand
and Calder with 17 minutes to go and Cameron provided the ammunition for
McRitchie but his header was well saved by Carroll. Culter continued to
pummel the beleaguered Broughty defence with both Rattray and Scott going
close and moments later Rattray was left with a free header from a Stewart
pass but the ball spun wide. With time running out Culter threw caution to
the wind and again had strong claims for a penalty turned down when Davidson
appeared to handle in the box. There was a bit of controversy late on when
Dow went down like a wounded animal following a Cameron challenge and
miraculously as soon as the free kick was awarded he was up and leaping like
a salmon: With time added on being played Forbes of Broughty was red carded
for a rash challenge.
