Culter suffered their second loss of the
season's league campaign when Ellon came from
behind twice to record a win which sees the league hopefuls sit proudly on
top of the pile.
In very windy conditions Culter never settled into a rhythm in a game
peppered with petty
fouls and bookings. The Ellon heroes were former Culter stars Derek Craigie
and Donny
Adam who provided balls for two of the goals.
Culter started with the stiff breeze in their faces but it was the visitors
who started pushing with Farmer flying down the wing and Clarke sent him
crashing to the ground. Stewart took the free kick but it was headed out of
the danger area. Rattray then sent in a fine cross but Cooper deflected the
ball for a comer. The best chance of the game came in the 11th minute when
Stewart found McRitchie who headed to Rattray, who in turn returned the
favour, but McRitchie's rising effort cleared the bar. At the other end
Glarke went skipping free but Pirie gathered his cross with ease. Cutter
went ahead in fine style in the l8th minute when Farmer went scurrying down
the left before whipping in a low ball and Ord lying unmarked at the back
post bundled the ball home. Five minutes later Culter broke free again when
a long Pirie clearance fell to McRitchie who turned deftly before thumping:
a volley over the bar. Ellon were gifted an, equaliser against :the ;run of
play when an innocuous looking free kick from Adam was headed home by Cooper
in the 29th minute. Play began to seesaw for a period with few chances at
either end until another surging Farmer run and cross found McRitchie who
steadied himself before burying the ball into the net at the second attempt.
At the restart Craigie should have been shown red when he aimed a kick at
McRitchie but referee Northcote mysteriously only produced a yellow. Culter
looked to be heading for the interval with a one goal cushion but deep into
added on time an Ade cross was headed out by Stewart only as far as Clarke
who gave Pirie no chance from deep inside the area.
At the start of the second period there was further controversy when Smith
of Culter was yellow carded for what appeared to be nothing but he shook the
setback off to send in a great ball for McRitchie who might have done better
than fire straight at Farquhar in the Ellon goal. Bookings were beginning to
fly thick and fast and Whyte of Ellon was the next to earn the referee's
wrath. Culter kept pushing in difficult conditions and Rattray was unlucky
to see his header from a Collie
cross skim the cross bar. Ellon did have a rare chance soon after but
McNamara wasted the opportunity when through on goal. Against the run of
play Eiton went in front when Craigie broke free on the right and he sent in
a perfect ball for McNamara to slot the ball home with ease in the 75th
minute. Culter sent on Glass and Morrison for Ord and Framer soon after but
despite Culter
camping in the Ellon half they could not rescue a point although McRitchie
did have a flashing volley fly over when on another day it might have found
the net.
